+ | Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin has been the President of Russia since 7 May 2012, a job he had from 2000 to 2008, and as Prime Minister from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2012. As KGB-agent he worked in Germany for over 5 years including around the time East Germany fell. Before becoming Prime Minister, he was head of the FSB at the time of the 1999 Russian Apartment bombings. The panic in Russia surrounding this Russian 9-11 propelled Putin into power as President of Russia. Within 10 years he was transferred to the First Chief Directorate, where he monitored foreigners and consular officials in Leningrad. For the next 5 to 10 years, Former New Sealand prime minister David Lange said that Putin served in Wellington as a shoe salesman and in Auckland.

+ | ====Putin's Dresden career====
+ | Putin, whose fluent command of German impressed many of the Stasi personnel, made name for himself as KGB agent in the East German city of Dresden. Stasi boss Erich Mielke signed a decree awarding him a bronze National People's Army service medal in 1988, after Putin working, turning and meeting with informants inside the DDR, such as scholars and scientists, Putin being part of 10-20 staff group in the city district according to former Stasi foreign intelligence chief Markus Wolf. Putin - named a lowly "water boy" by some Stasi personnel in an article by The Moscow Times - files do show Putin at least once communicated to General-Major Horst Böhm of the Dresden Stasi, who was promoted from the special task division in 1982. Former Stasi officers such as Thomas Muller mentioned the vague and contradictory stories about Putin as a deliberately ploy to avoid Putin being able to be easily analysed psychologically.
+ | |||
+ | According to Putin's official biography, "during the fall of the Berlin Wall that began on 9 November 1989, Putin saved the files of the Soviet Union Cultural Center and of the KGB villa in Dresden for the official authorities of the would-be united Germany to prevent demonstrators, including KGB and Stasi agents, from obtaining and destroying them. He then supposedly burnt only the KGB files, in a few hours, but saved the archives of the Soviet Cultural Center for the German authorities. Nothing is told about the selection criteria during this burning".

+ | ====Gladio Faction====
+ | Operation Gladio | ||
+ | Politico suggests that Putin was stationed in Dresden as handler of Gladio-linked "extreme-left" "terrorists". According to a former member of the Red Army Faction, the far-left terrorist group in West Germany, who claimed to have met him in Dresden, Putin had worked in support of members of the group, that staged attacks and even had some members become the victim of premature deaths. A 2020 report by Catherine Belton quotes one member as saying “there was nothing in Dresden, nothing at all, except the radical left. Nobody was watching Dresden, not the Americans, not the West Germans. There was nothing there. Except the one thing: these meetings with those comrades.” The spook apparently served as source in both works: an alleged former RAF member who was granted anonymity, was according to Der Spiegel a convict known as Dietmar C for multiple false statements, placing questions what to believe reading about Putin's time in Dresden.

+ | "As a 37-year-old KGB lieutenant colonel stationed in the East German city of Dresden, Putin watched nervously as angry crowds stormed the city’s huge Stasi compound in December 1989, just a few weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall signalled the end of Soviet control in Europe.
+ | Overrunning the offices of the East German secret police, the crowds moved on to its inner sanctum: the KGB headquarters. Putin called for armed backup to protect the employees and the sensitive files hidden inside, but was told no help would come. “Moscow is silent,” said the voice on the line. He had no choice but to go outside and lie to the crowds that he had heavily armed men waiting inside who would shoot anyone who tried to enter. The bluff worked, the mob dissipated and the KGB’s files on informers and agents remained safe."

He moved to Moscow in 1996 and joined President Boris Yeltsin's administration where he rose quickly, becoming Acting President on 31 December 1999 when Yeltsin resigned unexpectedly.

+ | Former President Yeltsin split up the KGB into a number of different services; Putin has reassembled most of them in the Federal Security Service (FSB), with the exception of foreign intelligence. He has also placed former KGB officers in key national security and economic posts: Nikolai Patrushev as Secretary of the Russian Security Council (which Putin chairs); Sergei Ivanov as defence minister and then (till 2016) as Kremlin chief of staff; and Igor Sechin as boss of oil giant Rosneft. Thirty years after the failed coup attempt, the KGB and its successors are as central to the way Russia operates as they were in the late Soviet period; the reformers around Gorbachev and Yeltsin are largely irrelevant.

+ | ===Wikileaks Cables===
+ | A 2010 cable from the U.S. Embassy in Paris said former US Defense Secretary Robert Gates called Putin a "leader plagued by an unmanageable bureaucracy and grappling with ruling a “virtual mafia state” dominated by corrupt businessmen and the security forces." Putin was believed to have less power than his alpha-dog image would suggest, as he was balancing dozens of corrupt special interest groups in a form of crony capitalism. Putin responded that "The diplomatic service should be more careful with its documents", and upset that he was called "Batman to Dmitry Medvedev's Robin"-act.

+ | As a head-spook turned president, the purpose of Putin's statements should be weighed more critically than most presidents, as George H. W. Bush his influence has shown. Interestingly enough, Putin often touches deep politics (as long as it's not about Russia) in his remarks at conferences, sometimes actually acknowledging larger purposes to deep events, but sometimes denying obvious deep events altogether, such as 9-11. Trump was for example depicted by Putin as a "good guy" who was stonewalled by corporate and special interests oversight.

Two days later Federal Security Service (FSS) Director Nikolai Patrushev announced that the Ryazan incident had been a "training exercise", although local FSB denied all knowledge. Alexander Litvinenko, Boris Berezovsky and Edward Jay Epstein have cited this as evidence that the FSB were responsible for the bombings. + | On 27 September 2018, Labour Party Deputy Leader Tom Watson claimed that the chemical attack in Salisbury was "ordered personally" by Vladimir Putin. Watson said fresh proof that one of the men accused by the UK of carrying it out is a Russian military officer showed that it was authorised by the Kremlin.
+ | |||
+ | According to the investigative website Bellingcat, Ruslan Boshirov's real name is Anatoliy Chepiga, a colonel who was personally given the 'Hero of the Russian Federation' award by President Putin in the past. Boshirov and his alleged accomplice Alexander Petrov have claimed they were in Salisbury as tourists shortly before former Russian agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, were poisoned by the nerve agent Novichok.
+ | |||
+ | Writing on his Facebook page, Tom Watson said:
+ | :"The revelation that one of the Skripal poisoning suspects is a highly-decorated Russian colonel - and not an innocent Cathedral spotter - is fresh proof that Britain is now at the sharp end of an assault ordered personally by Putin. Clearly we now need overhaul of national security strategy to protect our democracy from Putin's 'hybrid warfare'.
+ | |||
+ | Watson also called on Theresa May to mount a probe similar to the Mueller investigation into Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 United States presidential election:
+ | :"We now need the FULL picture on Russian interference - from murder on the streets to meddling in votes. 'Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty’. That means it's time for eyes wide open. + | Putin, as common enemy image to Europe and the US, often finds his way into CCM outlets for human interest actions by his office aimed as improving his approval rating domestically, often reported in a mocking way seemingly to ridicule him or paint him as purely "evil". Vladimir Putin's Inside Job, TDC, 2015 |
Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin has been the President of Russia since 7 May 2012, a job he had from 2000 to 2008, and as Prime Minister from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2012. As KGB-agent he worked in Germany for over 5 years including around the time East Germany fell.[1] Before becoming Prime Minister, he was head of the FSB at the time of the 1999 Russian Apartment bombings.[2] The panic in Russia surrounding this Russian 9-11[3] propelled Putin into power as President of Russia. He had previously worked as a KGB agent since 1975. Klaus Schwab has boasted of Putin's inclusion in the WEF Global Leaders for Tomorrow deep state recruitment network.[4] In March 2022, Klaus Schwab announced WEF had severed all ties with Putin and removed his listing and page from their website.[5]

Early Career
KGB Career
In 1975 Putin joined the Russian intelligence agency KGB was trained at a KGB School in Leningrad. Within 10 years he was transferred to the First Chief Directorate, where he monitored foreigners and consular officials in Leningrad. For the next 5 to 10 years, Former New Sealand prime minister David Lange said that Putin served in Wellington as a shoe salesman and in Auckland.[6][7]
Putin's Dresden career
Putin, whose fluent command of German impressed many of the Stasi personnel, made name for himself as KGB agent in the East German city of Dresden. Former Stasi officers such as Thomas Muller mentioned the vague and contradictory stories about Putin as a deliberately ploy to avoid Putin being able to be easily analysed psychologically.[8]
According to Putin's official biography, "during the fall of the Berlin Wall that began on 9 November 1989, Putin saved the files of the Soviet Union Cultural Center and of the KGB villa in Dresden for the official authorities of the would-be united Germany to prevent demonstrators, including KGB and Stasi agents, from obtaining and destroying them. He then supposedly burnt only the KGB files, in a few hours, but saved the archives of the Soviet Cultural Center for the German authorities. Nothing is told about the selection criteria during this burning".[9]
Gladio Faction

Politico suggests that Putin was stationed in Dresden as handler of Gladio-linked "extreme-left" "terrorists". Except the one thing: these meetings with those comrades.” The spook apparently served as source in both works: an alleged former RAF member who was granted anonymity, was according to Der Spiegel a convict known as Dietmar C for multiple false statements, placing questions what to believe reading about Putin's time in Dresden.[10][11]
Dresden Standoff
Thirty years ago, thousands of people occupied the regional headquarters of East Germany’s secret police, the Stasi, in Dresden, to prevent secret files being destroyed. A small incident on the sidelines involving KGB officer Vladimir Putin was later to become mythologized by Russian media -- but at the time, hardly anyone even noticed - Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty |
"As a 37-year-old KGB lieutenant colonel stationed in the East German city of Dresden, Putin watched nervously as angry crowds stormed the city’s huge Stasi compound in December 1989, just a few weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall signalled the end of Soviet control in Europe. Overrunning the offices of the East German secret police, the crowds moved on to its inner sanctum: the KGB headquarters. The bluff worked, the mob dissipated and the KGB’s files on informers and agents remained safe."[12]
Saint Petersburg
The head of the Committee for External Relations for his mentor, former professor and mayor of St. Petersburg Anatoly Sobchak caused Putin to face a corruption scandal, for which Sobchak and Putin - going against the city legislative council recommendation - were not fired, as Putin stopped the investigation.[13] Putin was accused in 1991 of exporting rare metals, oil products, and other raw materials for over $100m, after which the companies that agreed to barter contracts would have given food to the city in return, which did not happen.[14][15]
For 16 years Putin served as an officer in the KGB, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before he moved into politics, in his native Saint Petersburg in 1991. He moved to Moscow in 1996 and joined President Boris Yeltsin's administration where he rose quickly, becoming Acting President on 31 December 1999 when Yeltsin resigned unexpectedly.

How Alexei Navalny became Putin's greatest threat, VOX, 2021 |
Former President Yeltsin split up the KGB into a number of different services; Putin has reassembled most of them in the Federal Security Service (FSB), with the exception of foreign intelligence. Thirty years after the failed coup attempt, the KGB and its successors are as central to the way Russia operates as they were in the late Soviet period; the reformers around Gorbachev and Yeltsin are largely irrelevant.[16]
Putin stepped in during a time where Boris Yeltsin according to ISGP was encircled or working with Peterson Institute directors, and well-connected deep state actors Peter Peterson and Larry Summers alongside a Zionist influence.[17] Putin called the clan "clandestine CIA officers" and quickly replaced them with 3 deep state factions: The Siloviki - A Russian term for the intelligence and army community with many angry elements because of the Soviet Union's downfall; Oligarchs that were paid off and forced to stay out of politics in exchange for no meddling in ethical affairs; and nationalistic scholars and personal friends that could function as deep state functionaries from Putin's time in St. Petersburg.[18]
“Putin is a modern KGB/FSB elitist who has subdued the oligarchs and think tank elite. His power comes from the FSB old boys and the oil, gas, media and defense corporations he has taken control of.”
Joël van der Reijden (2005) [19]
ISGP names Putin as the #1 in Russia on his superclass index of most influential deep state operatives. Putin mostly controls the Russian Deep State and biggest Russian companies through appointing the directors at the most important businesses. These include, Menatep Bank, Gazprom, FGC UES, Rosneft, Nornickel and the GRU-linked Far West. Interestingly, Far West had investments and links to Soros, Adnan Khashoggi, Al Qaeda, Halliburton, facing scrutiny from the CIA and the Mossad, according to Peter Dale Scott.[20] Brendon O'Connell suggests Putin acts in consultation with "Kissinger and associates" as referenced in a 2009 New American article[21].
Wikileaks Cables
A 2010 cable from the U.S. Embassy in Paris said former US Defense Secretary Robert Gates called Putin a "leader plagued by an unmanageable bureaucracy and grappling with ruling a “virtual mafia state” dominated by corrupt businessmen and the security forces." Putin was believed to have less power than his alpha-dog image would suggest, as he was balancing dozens of corrupt special interest groups in a form of crony capitalism.[22] Putin responded that "The diplomatic service should be more careful with its documents", and upset that he was called "Batman to Dmitry Medvedev's Robin"-act.
Jose Gonzales, a Spanish prosecutor tasked with investigating Russian mafia related crime in Spain accused Russian political parties of working hand in hand with mafia groups, even going as far as claiming the Russian government gives crime bosses political functions to grant them immunity as diplomats.[23]
Deep Events
Litvinenko

On 21 January 2016, a long-awaited UK report into the death of ex-Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko [24] found two Russian men - Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitry Kovtun - deliberately poisoned 44-year-old Litvinenko in London in 2006 by putting the radioactive substance polonium-210 into his drink. It suggested this was probably done on the orders of the FSB with the knowledge and approval of the Russian President.[25]
“95% of the world’s terrorist attacks are orchestrated by the CIA.”
Vladimir Putin (2017) [26]
As a head-spook turned president, the purpose of Putin's statements should be weighed more critically than most presidents, as George H.
“His unpredictability is not related to him exclusively, it is also related to a very strong opposition within the country. They are stopping him from delivering almost any of his election platforms and plans. As soon as he makes a decision on migrants, a court blocks it straight-away. It happens all the time. So, it is wrong to say that his unpredictability depends only on him. No, it depends on the entire American political system.”
Vladimir Putin (July 2018) [27]
9/11 Denial
In 2011, at the Seliger 2011 youth forum, Putin replied to an audience question that "This is complete nonsense, it is impossible... To imagine that US intelligence services did it deliberately, with their own hands, is complete nonsense... Only people who do not understand the workings of security agencies can say that. It would be impossible to conceal it.”[28]

A good reason why Putin doesn't dare to question the official narrative of 9-11 could be found in the answer of the consequences if the public found out who was behind the 1999 Russian Apartment bombings,[29] where on 22 September 1999, after several bombings had already killed over 290 people, a bomb was found and defused in the Russian city of Ryazan. The Ryazan Incident marked the end of the bombings. [30]
Putin won the subsequent 2000 presidential election and was re-elected in 2004.

Skripal affair

On 27 September 2018, Labour Party Deputy Leader Tom Watson claimed that the chemical attack in Salisbury was "ordered personally" by Vladimir Putin. Watson said fresh proof that one of the men accused by the UK of carrying it out is a Russian military officer showed that it was authorised by the Kremlin.
According to the investigative website Bellingcat, Ruslan Boshirov's real name is Anatoliy Chepiga, a colonel who was personally given the 'Hero of the Russian Federation' award by President Putin in the past. Boshirov and his alleged accomplice Alexander Petrov have claimed they were in Salisbury as tourists shortly before former Russian agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, were poisoned by the nerve agent Novichok.
Writing on his Facebook page, Tom Watson said:
- "The revelation that one of the Skripal poisoning suspects is a highly-decorated Russian colonel - and not an innocent Cathedral spotter - is fresh proof that Britain is now at the sharp end of an assault ordered personally by Putin. Clearly we now need overhaul of national security strategy to protect our democracy from Putin's 'hybrid warfare'.
Watson also called on Theresa May to mount a probe similar to the Mueller investigation into Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 United States presidential election:
- "We now need the FULL picture on Russian interference - from murder on the streets to meddling in votes. 'Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty’. That means it's time for eyes wide open. Our investigating authorities have done their job in identifying the Salisbury assassins, now we need a Mueller-style probe into Russian interference in our democracy."[33]
Policies
Constitution Changes
Because of constitutionally mandated term limits, Putin was ineligible to run for a third consecutive presidential term in 2008. Dmitry Medvedev won the 2008 presidential election and appointed Putin as Prime Minister beginning a period of so-called "tandemocracy".[34] In September 2011, following a change in the law extending the presidential term from four years to six,[35] Putin announced that he would seek a third, non-consecutive term as President in the 2012 presidential election, an announcement which led to protests in many Russian cities. He won the election in March 2012 and subsequent ones.[36][37]
Personality
Putin, as common enemy image to Europe and the US, often finds his way into CCM outlets for human interest actions by his office aimed as improving his approval rating domestically, often reported in a mocking way seemingly to ridicule him or paint him as purely "evil". Examples of reporting include; creating and spreading an instructional video "Lets Learn Judo with Vladimir Putin"; bringing a dog to German leader Angela Merkel - who has a morbid fear of dogs; driving around (former) Ukrainian city Mariupol himself in a seemingly small, normal station car after 1000s had died in bloody combat the months before, as if nothing happened in the city where he was driving.
In 2013, a story circulated in corporate media that Putin allegedly stolen a $25,000 diamond-encrusted Superbowl ring.[38][39][40][41][42]
Another good example is 2007, when the Pentagon claimed Putin had Asperger Syndrome, a form of autism.[43][44][45][46]
Several outlets including UK's BBC, The Independent and Euronews uploaded an article named "Vladimir Putin: Russia's border 'doesn't end anywhere'" as example of this reporting on Putin, not mentioning he was hosting a kids quiz at an awards gala for geography students and was laughing after the statement, seemingly showing he was joking.[47]
Polarization

- Full article: “Russian Propaganda”
Starting from his second term Putin became increasingly known for his PR-Stunts painting him as hero of the common man. Examples are his large scale live interviews – often streamed live by the CCM[48] - with citizens[49], having a team of dozens of civil servants immediately[50] seeming to act on the often benign bureaucratic issue of the citizen calling in[51]. Also, part of this trend was, him being filmed half-naked horse-riding, doing judo, flying a jet fighter[52] or going to state-companies threatening to fire directors and ministers if they don't end strikes of the staff on the spot[53]. Putin has on occasion used Russian prison slang during these events, where he talks about Western politics, seemingly trying to engage the Russian lower class to support him.[54]
“Speaking on TV at the beginning of Second Chechen War, which Russian authorities viewed as a counter-terrorist operation, he declared that authorities would pursue terrorists everywhere: “If they are in the airport, we will pursue them in the airport. And if we capture them in the toilet, then we will waste them in the outhouse.””
Vladimir Putin (2021) [55]
This also includes the use of quotes from famous Russian poets and movies in nonsensical situations. When Putin was asked in 2021 whether he was “waging a cyberwar against America,” by Keir Simmons of the NBC, he answered that there has been no proof of Russian involvement and "Without evidence, you can take your complaint to the International League of Sexual Reform."[56]
Big Tech
At the Davos Agenda summit organized by the World Economic Forum in 2021, Putin called Big Tech a threat to 'Legitimate Democratic Institutions.'
“Digital giants have been playing an increasingly significant role in wider society, in certain areas they are competing with states … Here is the question, how well does this monopolism correlate with the public interest? Where is the distinction between successful global businesses, sought-after services and big data consolidation on the one hand, and the efforts to rule society[…] by substituting legitimate democratic institutions, by restricting the natural right for people to decide how to live and what view to express freely on the other hand?”

Putin was rumoured to try and enter Ukraine, but the European leaders laughed that off as cold war US rhetoric, according to EU's foreign and security policy chief Josep Borell.[59]
The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February 2022 when Russia launched a large-scale military operation against its south-west neighbour Ukraine. Russian tanks entered the northern suburbs of Kiev within 2 weeks, which promoted NATO countries to donate weapons and increase the placement of military and intelligence officers in Ukraine as supporting staff. Ukraine pushed the Russian offence back to east of the Dnepr, and ending 2022, the two factions were in a stalemate there.
“Western countries have been saying for centuries that they bring freedom and democracy to other nations. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead of bringing democracy they suppressed and exploited, and instead of giving freedom they enslaved and oppressed. The unipolar world is inherently anti-democratic and unfree; it is false and hypocritical through and through.
The United States is the only country in the world that has used nuclear weapons twice, destroying the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. And they created a precedent. Recall that during WWII the United States and Britain reduced Dresden, Hamburg, Cologne and many other German cities to rubble, without the least military necessity. It was done ostentatiously and, to repeat, without any military necessity. They had only one goal, as with the nuclear bombing of Japanese cities: to intimidate our country and the rest of the world.
The United States left a deep scar in the memory of the people of Korea and Vietnam with their carpet bombings and use of napalm and chemical weapons. It actually continues to occupy Germany, Japan, the Republic of Korea and other countries, which they cynically refer to as equals and allies. Look now, what kind of alliance is that? The whole world knows that the top officials in these countries are being spied on and that their offices and homes are bugged. It is a disgrace, a disgrace for those who do this and for those who, like slaves, silently and meekly swallow this arrogant behaviour.
They call the orders and threats they make to their vassals Euro-Atlantic solidarity, and the creation of biological weapons and the use of human test subjects, including in Ukraine, noble medical research.
It is their destructive policies, wars and plunder that have unleashed today’s massive wave of migrants. Millions of people endure hardships and humiliation or die by the thousands trying to reach Europe.”

'The girl is a little out of her mind': Putin criticises Truss on nuclear weapons stance - Guardian News - 27 October 2022 |
In his speech announcing the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Putin seemingly threatened the NATO with a nuclear strike or WW3 if they were to interfere.
“Whoever would try to stop us and further create threats to our country, to our people, should know that Russia’s response will be immediate and lead you to such consequences that you have never faced in your history. We are ready for any outcome.”

Not completely uncommon in Russia, but interesting nonetheless, Dutch broadcaster NOS reported[62] that during the war an increasing amount of Russian politicians and businessmen, many of whom where billionaires, where found dead under suspicious circumstances. CNN and The Atlantic blamed the Kremlin[63][64], many friends and family members that were traced back in Western Europe called out the "suicide" rulings - even in Russian media - but declined to point fingers.[65]

Russophobia | “A superpower is a cold war term. When people today say that Russia aspires to have this status, I interpret it in the following way: they want to undermine trust in Russia, to portray Russia as frightening, and create some kind of image of an enemy. … Russia is in favor of a multipolar world, a democratic world order, strengthening the system of international law, and for developing a legal system in which any small country, even a very small country, can feel itself secure, as if behind a stone wall. … Russia is ready to become part of this multipolar world and guarantee that the international community observes these rules. And not as a superpower with special rights, but rather as an equal among equals.” | 2007 | Vladimir Putin, Kremlin |
Strategy of tension | “The West sees how the process of forming a multipolar world order is gaining momentum. And in order to restrain development of independent, sovereign countries, to split the world majority, they use the same means. Madeleine Albright | “President Clinton and I first met Putin before that
when he was kind of acting president at, this was an APEC meeting in New Zealand, and at that stage Putin was trying to be very ingratiating and trying to make new friends - he was still cold - and the issue about him is he is very smart and in these meetings. He did not have talking points and he took notes himself. He also is somebody I have to describe this because, they actually did kind of a jazz concert for President Clinton and President Clinton's driving around and Putin was sitting there like this..no rhythm whatsoever.. and and (sic), but the thing that is interesting is how smart he really is and directed he was. The thing that I speak to more is something that happened before, that in 91 when the Soviet Union had fallen apart I was running a think-tank and I was asked to participate in a big survey of all of Europe after the end of the Cold War, and we had questionnaires and focus groups and things like that, and the focus group I'll never forget, is one outside of Moscow where this man stands up and says "I'm so embarrassed we used to be a superpower and now we're Bangladesh with missiles". And what I think happened I write it not so easy not so difficult to really deduce this, is Putin identified himself with that person who felt that the dignity and the grandeur of Russia had been lost and he has is bound and determined to restore that in every single way.” | Madeleine Albright | 2018 |

Institute for Statecraft/Purposes | “It is vital to understand the reasons behind Putin’s warped reasoning – the fact that he is prepared to lie and to kill to protect his wealth and power – if we are to comprehend why the Kremlin has launched this information attack on the West. Only then can we begin to combat it. In Soviet times there was an ideological element, the battle of Capitalism versus Communism. That no longer plays a part. But Putin wants the West at least to respect Russia; better still to fear Russia. That is Putin’s mindset. If in Soviet times the leadership of the USSR relied on Western sympathisers with the Communist cause to help them in their mission, nowadays the Kremlin can call upon support in the West from three groups of people: naïve Russophiles who, despite all the evidence to the contrary, believe that Putin “can’t be all that bad, and anyway the Americans are just as bad”; those who are prepared to toe the Russian line in return for money; or those who are being blackmailed.” | Integrity Initiative | May 2018 |

Russia | “Higher stakes meant aggressive mobilisation of media for an information war became a feature of 1990s electoral politics at regional level, following the pattern of the 1996 presidential election.
By then, the corruption associated with privatisation had made Yeltsin and the reformers unpopular – and many feared the communists would return to power. The democrats had to resort to desperate measures. Every possible resource was mobilised to ensure that Yeltsin was re-elected – including deals with powerful oligarchs with large media empires. The communists were defeated but the price was endemic cynicism about the democratic process. The Yeltsin presidency remained beholden to Russia’s regional governors and the oligarchs. It fell to Putin to curtail the powers of these groups, campaigning in 2000 under the slogan of “the dictatorship of law”. That such a slogan could have popular support shows the degree to which the public had become disillusioned in the late 1990s. However, the direction towards concentration of power had been set almost a decade before Putin was elected president. Russia’s reformers of the 90s largely achieved the irreversible economic change they wanted. They were less successful in creating a positive narrative for the new Russia. Reform had seemed to be based on the idea that Russia needed to learn as much as possible from the west. Over time, disillusion with this idealised view of the west grew and public opinion became more nationalistic.” | Adrian Campbell

Although the EU and US denounced the "war crimes" as multiple cities were bombed, several countries opted less severe sanctions to keep importing diamonds and luxury goods and gas (and their loaned money) from Russia, seemingly creating a new iron curtain in Eastern Europe. |

Since staging a false flag attack on his own people, Putin has been in a race with the US and CIA utilising the same tactics as them; neo-colonialism of Africa, bombing the Middle East and gaining wealth by putting countries against each-other and polarise his own people against each-other to make sure they don't turn against the government.
