The largest country entirely within Europe, a former part of the USSR

Ukraine was formerly a part of the Soviet Union; it is now an independent country in Eastern Europe.[1]

Location

Ukraine borders the Russian Federation to the east and northeast, Belarus to the northwest, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, Romania and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, respectively. It has an area of 603,628km², making it the largest country entirely within Europe.[2][3][4]

Ukraine holds the worlds most significant deposits of black soil (chernozems) for farming.[5][6]

History

"The Ukraine is a historically new construction. Until the late 19th century, the Ukraine was merely a region, and 100% of its inhabitants, the Ukrainians, or Rusyns (Ruthenians) as they were called in areas under Austria at that time, considered that their language, or whatever regional dialect they spoke, was Russian (“Russka mova”), and they had zero political awareness or identity separate from Russia [...] The concept of a “Ukrainian language” and the associated identity was constructed in areas under Austrian rule (parts of Galicia and Volhynia), with Austrian support and state financing, immediately after the local iteration of the 1848 revolutions, as a way to quell pro-Russian irredentism among landowners and the Russian Orthodox church in the region. From here on, the Galician literary dialect was also set as the “one and only” Ukrainian language, similar to how the dialect of Florence became “standard Italian.”

Due to Russia’s backwardness, the Russian Empire was unable to standardize its linguistic landscape in the same manner as the Germans and French had largely done by prior to World War 1, or World War 2 at the latest. That process requires compulsory schooling and mass literacy, which Russia did not have until Soviet days. Hence, by the time of the Russian Revolution, the Galician Ukrainist movement had been able to gain some marginal but elite following throughout all territories that spoke Ukrainian dialects rather than “Great Russian.”

This was subsequently channeled, with the Russian collapse of 1917-1918, into the formation of the Ukrainian breakaway state. After this was put down by the Bolsheviks (first and foremost, Ukrainian urban Bolsheviks from Kharkov and what’s today called Donetsk), it again came to life under German rule with the Galician-based Banderist movement.

Most Ukrainians did not vote for independence from the USSR in 1991, but the republic was abandoned by Yeltsin, and thus, had independence thrust upon it. There was a general lack of enthusiasm for the state, a lack of understanding as to its purpose, especially as by this time, almost all Ukrainian citizens spoke Russian as their language of work, at least, and among well over half of the population, of the home as well. In short, there was a near-total ideological vacuum."[7]

Recent history

Full article: 2014 Ukraine coup

The Ukraine has been the victim of several regime changes, including the 2004 Orange Revolution and the very significant 2014 Ukraine coup.

Following weeks of protests as part of the Euromaidan movement (2013–2014), pro-Russian Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych and the leaders of the Ukrainian parliamentary opposition on 21 February 2014 signed a settlement agreement that called for an early election. The following day, Yanukovych fled from Kyiv ahead of an impeachment vote that stripped him of his powers as president. Leaders of the Russian-speaking eastern regions of Ukraine declared continuing loyalty to Yanukovych, causing the 2014 pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine. The unrest was followed by the annexation of Crimea by Russia in March 2014 and the War in Donbass, which started in April 2014 with the creation of the Russia-backed quasi-states of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics. An American advisor to the Ukrainian military remarked that: "Since the latter end of 2018, [...] the West seems to be paying more attention to the Ukrainian conflict."[8]

War crimes

The Azov Battalion («Азов») is a right-wing extremist and neo-Nazi unit of the National Guard of Ukraine, based in Mariupol, in the Azov Sea coastal region. Local resident, reporter and former US Navy employee Patrick Lancaster has interviewed dozens of Ukrainian civilians accusing them of war crimes starting in 2014 until today, in particular in the Donbass region of Ukraine. A significant piece of the battalion was killed or captured in the siege of Mariupol in 2022.[9]

Sergey Korotkikh was the first foreign fighter to receive Ukrainian citizenship for services rendered fighting with the Azov batallion; with which he was "from the very beginning".[10] Here pictured with Petro Poroshenko during the ceremony. Korotkikh stands accused to have been participated in the killing and beheading of migrant workers in Russia in 2007.[11][12][13]

Azov was reported by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to commit mass looting, unlawful detention, and torture in 2016.[14][15][16] Several other reports tell stories of Azov soldiers raping men, waterboarding another, electrocuting another and raping women and girls, with several men being placed in psychiatric hospitals.[17][18]

Patrick Lancaster remained as one of the only non Ukrainians still reporting from the war zones where Azov was active in 2022, continuing work from the 2014 Ukraine coup/Civil war. In particular, the bombing and killing of civilians by Azov inside the Donbass appeared to continue as Lancaster's videos have shown, although very unreported in western media.[19]

Early in 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received visits from world leaders Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz and Boris Johnson in an effort to prevent what NATO described as an imminent invasion by Russian troops massed on the border with Ukraine.

However, on 18 February 2022, Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) head Denis Pushilin and head of the Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR), Leonid Pasechnik, told civilians in the two separatist states in Ukraine's Donbass Region to evacuate to Russia to avoid getting caught in the crossfire in case of an attack by Ukrainian government forces. Pushilin said Russian officials in the neighbouring Rostov Region expected an inflow of 700,000 evacuees. He urged people “to heed to the warning and take the right decision,” saying that the relocation would be temporary and would save lives.[20]

Corruption

Gallup reported in 2019 that "Just 9% of Ukrainian residents have confidence in the national government, the lowest confidence level in the world for the second straight year".[21]

Sex trafficking

Human traffickers exploit desperation of Ukrainian refugees and their children - PBS Newshour - November 2022.

Refugee waves caused by the Russian invasion caused 8 million Ukrainians to flee, putting a strain on Ukraine's ability to get enough manpower. Several media outlets began to report human trafficking networks where girls and boys that fled were either kidnapped or bought to Mexico, Turkey or the UAE.[22][23] Demand for Ukrainian women was reported by European Commissioner Ylva Johansson to be sky-high in 2022.[24] According to the US government, several Ukrainian officials were abducting and selling children from Ukrainian orphanages, from a pool of at least 104000 children.[25]

In 2021, Ukraine received 54,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine as "humanitarian" aid from the Government of Lithuania. The country plans to later provide Ukraine with another 77,000 doses of this vaccine.[26]

Anti-vaxxers are allegedly paving the way for Russian invasion.[27]

Arms Production

Ukraine was the #9 nation worldwide as regards arms exports from 2012-2016.[28]

Nuclear weapons

Full article: Ukraine/Nuclear weapons

Ukraine destroyed the nuclear weapons in it's arsenal following the Budapest Memorandum in 1994. The decision was called a historic mistake by some and there were clear statements to the effect more recently, that nuclear rearmament was thought of as a possible option.

NATO

The country is aspiring to become NATO member. At the beginning of 2015 the Ukrainian ambassador to Turkey said the Ukrainian armed forces were being funded, trained and equipped for eventual NATO membership.[29] The process, NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP), was first attempted 2008 and strongly pushed for by the Bush administration,[30][31][32] which continued in the process for "distinctive partnership" in 2012,[33] for which the integration of Ukraine's Special Forces into the NATO structure, NATO Response Force (NRF), is a stepping stone, which started 1 January 2014.[34][35][36]

By 2017 the DRIVE remarked how Ukrainian special operations forces show a steady increase in Western influence through gear and weapons they carry.[37] In June 2019 units from Ukraine reached the certification status[38][39] and became qualified to be deployed and operate under the umbrella of NATO’s Response Force.[40]

2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine“After his visit to Washington, TIME followed the President and his team back to Kyiv, hoping to understand how they would react to the signals they had received, especially the insistent calls for Zelensky to fight corruption inside his own government, and the fading enthusiasm for a war with no end in sight. On my first day in Kyiv, I asked one member of his circle how the President was feeling. The response came without a second’s hesitation: “Angry.”

The usual sparkle of his optimism, his sense of humor, his tendency to liven up a meeting in the war room with a bit of banter or a bawdy joke, none of that has survived into the second year of all-out war. “Now he walks in, gets the updates, gives the orders, and walks out,” says one longtime member of his team. Another tells me that, most of all, Zelensky feels betrayed by his Western allies. They have left him without the means to win the war, only the means to survive it. But his convictions haven’t changed. Despite the recent setbacks on the battlefield, he does not intend to give up fighting or to sue for any kind of peace. On the contrary, his belief in Ukraine’s ultimate victory over Russia has hardened into a form that worries some of his advisers. It is immovable, verging on the messianic. “He deludes himself,” one of his closest aides tells me in frustration. “We’re out of options. We’re not winning. But try telling him that.”

Zelensky’s stubbornness, some of his aides say, has hurt their team’s efforts to come up with a new strategy, a new message. As they have debated the future of the war, one issue has remained taboo: the possibility of negotiating a peace deal with the Russians”

2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine“I asked them – are you with us?” Zelensky said. “They answered that they are with us, but they don’t want to take us into the alliance. I’ve asked 27 leaders of Europe, if Ukraine will be in NATO, I’ve asked them directly — all are afraid and did not respond We were left by ourselves. Who is ready to go to war for us? Honestly, I don’t see anybody. Who is ready to give Ukraine guarantees of NATO membership? Honestly, everybody is afraid”Russia Today

2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine“The bitter truth is that Washington's foreign policy establishment never actually considered Zelensky - or his predecessor Poroshenko - to be allies or partners of the United States. Overflowing with a toxic mix of ignorance, arrogance, and extreme cynicism, Washington's elites have always viewed Ukraine as a tool to "regime-change" a Russia that, after its post-Yeltsin recovery, would no longer take its direction from them. The false gods of American exceptionalism are jealous ones indeed.”Daniel McAdams26 February 2022
Azov Battalion“In 2014, when the volunteer squads were defending the country, many of their appeals were quite radical against the Russian Federation. They were volunteers and it was their personal point of view. The Azov battalion are not volunteers, but are part of the National Guard. They are the official army of our state. Patrick Lancaster“I mean the people that were born there before 1956 were born in Russia so it just makes sense to them to go back and then once I was there for the referendum and then once that kind of fizzled off and started calming down once you know Russia was in, and you know you know it was a done deal for pretty much, then Donetsk started to develop so I ended up going to Donetsk here and staying showing the referendum here as well again.

It was a lot different than the west was making it out to see, you know, seeing the fact that there's no Ukrainian language that's spoken here.

There's you know the vast majority of the population is ethnically Russian and they all you know would like to consider this, you know this area part of Russia I mean they definitely do now at that point.”

Patrick Lancaster“I mean I'm just I've been working here on this side of the contact line and the anti-Ukraine government territory so I've only been able to show what happened here, but what I've seen here with my own eyes is indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas year after year by Ukrainian forces. Indiscriminate and targeted in fact, just last month (..) two civilian electric plants targeted by Ukrainian forces. (...)

Now that the war is really hot attacks are coming in every hour, and I mean the only thing that's being shown in the west is the results of Russian attacks on Ukraine, but what the west isn't showing is every day here in Donetsk there is attacks from Ukraine controlled territory Ukraine attacking the civilian population here. In the last 12 days there has been 19 civilians killed.

I mean it's not a huge amount like across Ukraine right now but in the last 12 days in the Donetsk people's republic controlled territory there's been 19 civilians killed and I believe 27 injured and these are results of Ukrainian attacks on mostly civilian areas of course battle's been raging on the front line since this new development happened and even before, but so you know a lot of the shells are hitting civilian areas and I assume a lot are hitting military areas as well... Those aren't as free to report on as the other ones.”

Vladimir Putin“Western countries have been saying for centuries that they bring freedom and democracy to other nations. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead of bringing democracy they suppressed and exploited, and instead of giving freedom they enslaved and oppressed. The unipolar world is inherently anti-democratic and unfree; it is false and hypocritical through and through.

The United States is the only country in the world that has used nuclear weapons twice, destroying the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. And they created a precedent. Recall that during WWII the United States and Britain reduced Dresden, Hamburg, Cologne and many other German cities to rubble, without the least military necessity. It was done ostentatiously and, to repeat, without any military necessity. They had only one goal, as with the nuclear bombing of Japanese cities: to intimidate our country and the rest of the world.

The United States left a deep scar in the memory of the people of Korea and Vietnam with their carpet bombings and use of napalm and chemical weapons. It actually continues to occupy Germany, Japan, the Republic of Korea and other countries, which they cynically refer to as equals and allies. Look now, what kind of alliance is that? The whole world knows that the top officials in these countries are being spied on and that their offices and homes are bugged. It is a disgrace, a disgrace for those who do this and for those who, like slaves, silently and meekly swallow this arrogant behaviour.

They call the orders and threats they make to their vassals Euro-Atlantic solidarity, and the creation of biological weapons and the use of human test subjects, including in Ukraine, noble medical research.

It is their destructive policies, wars and plunder that have unleashed today’s massive wave of migrants. Millions of people endure hardships and humiliation or die by the thousands trying to reach Europe.”

Russia/Encirclement“Unfortunately, it’s US “diplomacy” which brought the US, Russia, Ukraine, and NATO to the current standoff. As the Warsaw Pact disintegrated and the Soviet Union collapsed, US encouragement for those events included pledges that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization wouldn’t take advantage of the situation to expand eastward. Since then, NATO has inexorably pushed in that direction, nearly doubling the number of member states. Thanks, US “diplomacy.”

Things began coming to a head with the US-sponsored coup in Ukraine that replaced its “Russia-friendly” regime with a “US/Europe-friendly” regime in 2014, courtesy of Barack Obama. Thanks, US “diplomacy.”

Then in 2019, the US withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, which forbade the US to place missiles within surprise strike distance of Russia, and Russia to place similar missiles within surprise strike distance of NATO. The US followed up by placing exactly such missiles in Poland, courtesy of Donald Trump. Some “diplomacy.”... Then the US went into overdrive (courtesy of Trump and Biden) against the opening of a pipeline (Nord Stream 2) which would have supplied Russian natural gas to Germany. The pipeline would have been a force for peace insofar as Russia likes to sell natural gas (at a fraction of prices the US can offer), and Germans like to not freeze to death.”
Thomas Knapp2021
Russia/Encirclement“We have made it clear that Nato’s move to the east is unacceptable (...) The United States is standing with missiles on our doorstep. It’s right to avoid escalation into a direct conflict between Moscow and Nato. Volodymyr Zelensky“I know Zelensky a little. I know his team. He’s addicted to glory and hates criticism, first and foremost. This isn’t necessarily bad for an actor, but absolutely unacceptable for a politician, let alone a president.

Presently, Zelensky isn’t making any decisions. The U.S. State Department is making them for him, with Jake Sullivan as his supervisor. In Ukraine, power is executed by the head of the President’s Office Andrei Yermak. And my sources say he’s ready to dump Zelensky.

Ukraine has always been fertile soil for corruption, and today, it’s in full bloom. A few weeks before the war, ex- Zelensky advisor Sergei Shefir was moving enormous sums of cash out of the country and transferring funds to offshore accounts.

Ex-Minister of Defense Reznikov transferred $1 billion to offshore accounts. But that is just a drop in the ocean. Recently, I released a video on “X” about some embezzlement cases known to the media. The total amount in these cases reaches $60 billion. That’s why people aren’t eager to go to the frontlines. They don’t want to die only to make Zelensky and his team even richer. Does the White House know this? Certainly. They’re covering up for each other.

For years, the West has been hooking Ukrainian elites. Corrupted officials are easier to control; it’s leverage. When the United States decides to dump Zelensky, you’ll see it immediately by the number of reports about his corruption in the global media.”
