Volunteer paramilitary unit formed during the early stages of the conflict in Eastern Ukraine in 2014, responsible for war crimes.

The Donbas Battalion was originally created in 2014 as a volunteer unit by Semen Semenchenko, following the break out of the civil war in Ukraine.

In late 2014 Donbas Battalion delivered an ultimatum to President Poroshenko, declaring: “Should a single city be surrendered, the President will fly off his chair, there will be a military coup and the soldiers will take power into their own” .

It is now a unit of the National Guard of Ukraine subordinated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

History

The unit was established in the context of the war in Ukraine since 2014 on the initiative of businessman and former Ukrainian officer Semen Sementschenko to militarily fight the pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. Sementschenko, who calls himself the commander of the unit, justified this step, among other things, with the weakness of the Ukrainian army during the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014 and at the beginning of the war in eastern Ukraine. The battalion is financed only by private donations, he said, and its members are exclusively volunteers who receive brief military training in special camps.
