Arrest

On 2 September 2023, a Ukrainian court placed billionaire businessman Igor Kolomoisky under arrest for two months over fraud and money laundering charges as part of the war-torn country’s crackdown on corruption.[3] The court gave Kolomoisky the option of posting bail of more than 509 million hryvnias, equivalent to more than $13m. Al Jazeera's Rob McBride, reporting from Kyiv, said the court’s decision has caught many people by surprise:

“This has come as a big shock here in Kyiv. There’s been rumblings of it on social media all day. Kolomoisky is one of Ukraine’s most high-profile, richest oligarchs in the country. He was a supporter of Volodymyr Zelensky’s presidential bid back in 2019. He has been under US sanctions since 2021.
“This comes amid a campaign by the Ukrainian government to tackle corruption and to be seen to be tackling corruption. There is a prevailing mood in the country at the moment that the government is tackling corruption. A number of officials have been dismissed and also been prosecuted.”[4]

US ban

In 2021 the US banned oligarch Igor Kolomoisky and his family from entering the country due to "significant corruption", with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken claiming that he was "involved in corrupt acts that undermined rule of law and the Ukrainian public's faith in their government's democratic institutions and public processes, including using his political influence and official power for his personal benefit" and that he "poses a serious threat to the future of Ukraine."[5]

President Zelensky stripped Kolomoisky of his Ukrainian citizenship by presidential decree in July 2022.[6]
