Syria

In October 1956, Allen Dulles and Richard Helms met Dick White and George Kennedy Young in London to discuss plans for a coup in Syria. White and Young did not mention Britain's impending attempt to retake the Suez canal.

Hungary

On 1 November 1956, during the Hungarian uprising, Dulles wrongly briefed Eisenhower that "armed force could not effectively be used" by the Soviet Union. On 5 November, however, he told the president that the Soviets were ready to send 250,000 troops to Egypt to defend the Suez Canal.
