World War I, the "Great War", begin in 1914 after a highly suspect set of circumstances. School history textbooks tend to make much of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria.
The Christmas Truce
In various places at the WWI front line, soldiers refused to fight around Christmas, and declared a truce, singing songs together, playing football and giving each other gifts.[1][2] This was a shock to the higher ups who devised ways to prevent a re-occurrence. This refusal to embrace enemy images may have been influenced by MDMA use.
Harrison Tax Act
In USA, the Harrison Tax Act restricted the sale of drugs including cocaine and heroin, beginning a series of legal restrictions on drugs which would morph into the "war on drugs".[3]
