Major-General Fergus Alan Humphrey Ling was the Defence Services Consultant for the Institute for the Study of Conflict from 1970. [1] He was Secretary the Institute and its successor organisation the Research Institute for the Study of Conflict and Terrorism up until his death. It was chiefly Ling and former diplomat Robert Thompson who acquired the intial corporate funding for the group. [2] Ling also helped negotiate the Institute's chairty status with the Charities Commission. [3]
