DescriptionYearly discreet get-together of huge amount of transatlantic politicians, media and military and corporations, under the auspices of the CIA and NATO-close German Marshall Fund.

The Brussels Forum 2010 was held March 25-27, 2010, arranged by the CIA/NATO-close German Marshall Fund of the United States[1][2]. It gathered over 400 politicians, spooks, journalists and think-tankers.[3] The event itself, held under Chatham House rules, received as good as no coverage in corporate media. But the agenda topics did, the gathering giving a signal to the participants on how to speak, write and act on these transatlantic subjects.

Agenda

The sessions were held over 3 days, some were off the record.[4][5]

  • Afghanistan: a winnable war?
  • The transatlantic relationship in a multipolar world: does it matter?
  • From rescue to recovery: efforts to promote strong, sustainable, and balanced growth
  • Pakistan: partner or problem?
  • Euroatlantic security: reading from different scripts?
  • Transatlantic approaches to innovation: what's on the agenda?
  • Overcoming unemployment: the counterpunch of the economic crisis
  • An ocean apart? transatlantic approaches to re-regulating finance
  • Remarks by the co- chairmen of the u.s. congressional delegation and by the president of the European Parliament
  • Introductory remarks—building a security architecture in Europe, by Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Secretary General of NATO.
  • Geostrategic consequences of the economic crisis
  • Can we live on services alone? the future of manufacturing in the United States and Europe
  • The Balkans 2010
  • The rise of nuclear Iran
  • Networking dinner
  • Missile defense: are the differences irreconcilable?
  • The Asian elephant in the transatlantic room
  • A changing Turkey
  • Eliminating hunger: transatlantic action for global food security
  • Redesigning the western partnership with india
  • Climate change: what will it take?
  • The committee to save the world? the G20 and the future of global economic governance

Themes

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Secretary General of NATO, was lobbying for expensive new weapons systems:

A true joint Euro Atlantic missile defense would demonstrate our collective will, not only to defend ourselves against the new threats of today and tomorrow, but also to shoulder the responsibility...And it would be an opportunity for Europe to demonstrate, again, to the United States that the allies are ready and willing to invest in the capabilities we need to defend ourselves....But I believe there is yet another reason for developing missile defense. And that is to create a new dynamic in European and Euro Atlantic security....But we also need a decision from Russia, a decision to view missile defense as an opportunity rather than a threat.[6]

President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso wanted to "share" as much information as possible with the United States:

“In the modern world internal and external security are indivisible. So a vital aspect of improving security cooperation counterterrorism is a sharing of information. We have been working hard in the U.S. to develop effective procedures to that end and we are fully committed to this. But it is essential to take into account the particular concerns of Europe on fundamental rights and privacy that is lesson of the recent vote by the European Parliament on the so-called SWIFT agreement.”
José Manuel Barroso (March 2010)  [7]

The spooky Craig Kennedy remembered an obscure period in Barroso's CV:

“Some of us think of José Manuel Barroso as a former scholar at Georgetown University in Washington.”
Craig Kennedy,  German Marshall Fund (March 2010)  [7]
