James Appathurai was NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges (DASG) when he attended the 2024 Bilderberg meeting.[1] "As DASG, he works on policy development and implementation in the fields of Emerging and Disruptive Technologies, cyber security, counter-terrorism, the security implications of climate change, and hybrid defence."[2]
Career
From March 1993, he worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as an assistant editor. In August 1994, he joined the Canadian Ministry of National Defense.[3]
In May 1998, he worked at NATO in the Department of Political Relations. In January 2004, he was appointed to the post of NATO Press Secretary.[3]
From December 2010 until April 2022, Appathurai was the Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy.[3][4][5][6] During this time, he took on the role of Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia,[7][8][9][10] and held discussions with the government of Georgia about potential NATO accession.[11][12]
In 2021, President of Georgia, the French diploamt Salome Zurabishvili, awarded Appathurai the Order of the Golden Fleece for his contribution to Georgia–NATO relations.[13]
