Joseph Luns was a Dutch politician who was the longest ever serving Secretary General of NATO. He was a regular Bilderberger.

Background

Luns studied law at Amsterdam University from 1932 to 1937. As a young student he positioned himself on the political right, favouring a strong authority for the state. Luns joined the National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands (NSB) in 1933 and left three years later.[1]

Career

He joined the Dutch Diplomatic Service in 1938 and, after a two-year assignment at the Private Office of the Foreign Minister, was appointed as attaché in Bern (Switzerland) in 1940. In late 1941, he moved to Lisbon, Portugal. In both countries, he was involved in assistance to Dutch refugees, political espionage and counterintelligence for the Dutch exile government. In 1943, he was transferred to the Dutch embassy in London.

In 1949, Luns was appointed as deputy Dutch permanent representative to the United Nations.

Luns entered Dutch politics in 1952, becoming Minister of Foreign Affairs. Luns stayed as Foreign Minister until 1971 in both centre-left and centre-right governments. He promoted strong and intensified political and military co-operation in NATO, under US nuclear hegemony.

In 1971, Luns was appointed as NATO secretary-general. Luns retired as secretary-general in 1984, staying in office for almost 13 years, more than anyone else

Bilderberg

As is suspected for all subsequent Secretaries General of NATO, Luns attended Bilderberg meetings before being appointed to lead NATO. Sources indicated he attended, at least, in 1964, 1970-1984.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

Sadomasochism

According to a BVD surveillance dossier, in the early 1970s Luns frequented a massage parlour in the Hague. The information came from, Rien Werner, a pimp found "politically reliable" enough to provide the spooks with information. He does this together with his bisexual friend Pieter Wielemaker. According to Werner, Wielemaker is married "pro forma" to a "lady of light morals" who runs a massage parlor on the first floor. Among her clients would be "Mr. Luns", who would engage in "sadomasochistic" practices. according to the BVD rapporteur: "Wielemaker finds it unpleasant in a sense that someone like the Minister of Foreign Affairs feels the need for this, but on the other hand it is a good customer." The rapporteur considers "this type of story is not a stimulating literature". Nevertheless, he considers himself obliged to "report the matter unabridged". If true, this could make the minister vulnerable for blackmail.[8]

Arms dealing

In 1972, the BVD found a whistleblower with explosive and compromising information. The whistleblower is the sous-chef of the Department of security of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jan Hesselink. The note ('Very Secret') of the conversation with him begins with the statement that Hesselink "was absolutely not allowed to speak about the following, but that he did it anyway because the BVD had to be informed in his opinion." Hesselink says that after Luns left, the official residence was empty and officials discovered documents there. The conversation note: "these documents dealt with arms transactions and arms shipments by arms dealers to Portugal, which is illegal due to an UN-embargo. The documents showed that Luns was involved in these transactions and received funds for them. "Hesselink says he does not know who is in possession of the documents now, but if they fall into the hands of the press Luns can be "broken".[8]
