DescriptionThe 18th Bilderberg meeting, with 85 participants

The 1969 Bilderberg Meeting was the 18th such meeting and had 85 participants from 14 European countries, the United States, Canada and "various international organisations".[1] It was held at the Hotel Marienlyst, Elsinore, Denmark. As in some later years, John Pesmazoglou of Greece was invited but could not attend since the Greek authorities denied him a passport. The 87 guests included 13 business executives, 19 politicians, 3 financiers, 13 editors/journalists and 8 academics. The next was the 1970 Bilderberg.

Agenda

The 1969 Bilderberg Agenda has been leaked and is now online.[1]

1. Elements of instability in Western Society

The background for discussion of this item of the Agenda consisted of a paper on Sources of Political Conflict in Developed Societies prepared by Ralf Dahrendorf which was distributed before the meeting. He began by noting that for more than a decade relations between the Western powers and the Soviet bloc had been characterized by the development of limited but important elements of co-operation along with the persistence of overriding conflict.[2][1]

In appraising the shortcomings and imperfections of the Atlantic Alliance, considerable attention was paid to the unsatisfactory state of public opinion vis-a-vis NATO.[1]

2. Conflicting attitudes within the Western World towards relations with the USSR and the other Communist States of Eastern Europe in the light of recent events

The groundwork for discussion of this item consisted of three papers prepared by an American and two French participants. These papers had been distributed among participants some weeks before the meeting.[1]
