Education

Career
He was an editor at De Gids, a staff member of the [International Institute of Social Studies|Institute of Social Studies in The Hague]] and professor by special appointment of international relations at Erasmus University. Van Benthem also held various board positions; he was chairman of the board of Het Nationaal Toneel and of the Dutch Society for International Affairs. He was also a member of the Advisory Council on International Affairs of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence.
Van Benthem van den Bergh was initially known as a critic of American foreign policy, particularly at the time of the Vietnam War. Later, in a polemic with the peace movement, he increasingly developed into a supporter of the military strategy of nuclear deterrence. He did not hide the fact that he thought the church organization IKV was naive, because this peace movement advocated unilateral steps to reduce nuclear arsenals. Van Benthem van den Bergh considered the nuclear weapons of Americans and Russians necessary for mutual assurance that these weapons of mass destruction would not be used. He attached the political consequence to this that "the central monopolies of the communist states (...) may no more be affected than in the Soviet Union itself." He kept this position for a long time, until his inaugural speech as professor at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam in June 1989.[1]
In 2004, Van Benthem van den Bergh wrote a personal book about a cycle ofmanic-depressive depression that lasted for seven years.
