Kaare Sandegren was a politician for the Labor Party, diplomat and for several years head of the international department of the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO). He attended Bilderberg 1969 as deputy head of the foreign policy think tank NUPI. He later was member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

His international politics orientation was directed toward the United States and transatlanticism, as reflected in his education and positions.


Kaare Sandegren graduated in art in 1947 at Fagerborg Gymnasium in Oslo and studied history and social economicsat the University of Oslo (UiO) and later political science at the University of Oregon and at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts/Harvard). In 1956, he took the master's degree (M.Sc.) in political science at UiO.

Early career

He then was an aspirant to the Foreign Service and served in the Norwegian delegation to NATO in Paris from 1959 and at the embassy in Bangkok 1963-1965. He was appointed bureau chief in 1968.

1967-1969 he was deputy head of the foreign policy think tank NUPI. He was associated with LO from 1971, where he held a number of positions, including as LO's international secretary, until he retired in 1994. In 1972, he was elected Deputy Secretary General of the European Trade Union Confederation (DEFS). He was active as a representative in the Free Professional International and Nordic/European co-organizations. Later he had assignments for LO and ILO in southern Africa.

Later career

Sandegren was a city councilor in Oslo (finance and urban development committees), and was active in the Labor Party in various organizations and positions, among others in the Labor Movement's International Support Committee, International Committee in the Labor Party, and the board and supervisory board of the Oslo Labour Party. He was a business councilor in Rune Gerhardsen's city ​​council in Oslo in 1994.

He was active in public debate (Aftenposten and Arbeiderbladet/Dagsavisen/Internasjonal Politikk) about security policy, business policy and urban policy.

He was a deputy member of the Nobel Committee for several years, and was promoted to full member between 1990 and 1993.

He was active as a musician on bass and piano, especially in the field of jazz, in his younger years.
