Børge Brende is a Norwegian politician, President of the World Economic Forum since 2017, and member of the Bilderberg Steering Committee.[1]

Background

He had a brief journalistic career, and worked in the Aftenposten political department under Egil Sundar. From a young age, Brende participated as a manager in family companies Brende-entrepreneur AS, where he was chief financial officer 1990-1992.

Brende studied history and social economics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, finished in 1997.

Brende joined The Youth Group of the Conservative Party, (Høyre) at age 14. Brende was political secretary of the Young Conservatives in 1985, and Chairman 1988–1990. He was deputy chair of the pro-EU European Movement 1991-1992 (before the Norwegian EU-referendum 1994).

Brende was the 1st Deputy Leader in the Conservative Party 1994-1998. He was member of parliament (Storting) between 1997 and 2009. Brende was a member of the Storting's Finance Committee 1997–2001.

In PMKjell Magne Bondevik's second government, Brende was Minister of the Environment 2001-2004 and Minister of Trade and Industry 2004-2005.

He was Deputy Chairman of the Advisory Board at the Norwegian Defence University College (2010–2011).

International Politics

Brende served as Chairman of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development from 2003 to 2004.

In January 2008, Brende joined the World Economic Forum as managing director, particularly in charge of relations with governments and civil society. In 2009, Brende joined the Norwegian Red Cross as Secretary General.

He re-joined the World Economic Forum in 2011 as managing director with responsibility for policy initiatives and engagement of the Forum's non-business constituents.

He moved back to national politics and became Minister of Foreign Affairs under PM Erna Solberg from 2013 to 2017, during the Norwegian involvement in the war on Syria and the placement of several US bases on Norwegian territory.

Brende became the the president of the World Economic Forum from mid-October 2017.
