William Joseph Burns is an American retired diplomat who was appointed Director of the Central Intelligence Agency in the Biden administration on 19 March 2021.[1]

Bill Burns was previously United States Deputy Secretary of State from 2011 to 2014, and in 2009 he was Acting Secretary of State before the Senate confirmation of Hillary Clinton. He retired from the United States Foreign Service in 2014 after a 32-year diplomatic career.[2]

From 2014 to 2021, Bill Burns was president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
