Dr Wolfgang Schäuble was a German lawyer and politician of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party. "A committed transatlanticist"[1], his political career has spanned more than four decades.[2]

Activities

Schäuble considered the former Baden–Württemberg Minister-President Hans Filbinger as his political foster father[3], and paid homage to him until the very end. In 1978, it was exposed that Filbinger was a dedicated NSDAP-member and military judge.[4]

During the German unification he argued to have the files of the STASI destroyed.[5]

He resigned from the post as chairman of the CDU. as well as from the leadership of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in 2000, in the wake of the party financing scanda where he received DM 100,000 from the arms dealer and lobbyist Karlheinz Schreiber back in 1994.[6]

In 2003, he wanted Germany to support or even join in the invasion of Iraq.[7]

In August 2020, he saw Covid as an opportunity to ram through a centralized EU economic and financial union:

The corona crisis is a great opportunity. Resistance to change becomes less during the crisis. We can now manage the [EU] economic and financial union, which we have not been able to achieve politically so far ...[8]

Greece

He is much disliked in Greece owing to the looting ("austerity measures") he forced on the country.[9][10] A prominent critic is Yanis Varoufakis who was his negotiating partner.
