A branch of computer science intended to enable computers to carry out tasks previously made by human beings.

Artificial intelligence (A.I.) is the branch of computer science which seeks to re-create the "intelligence" of human beings in software.[1]

A.I. gained more popularity in the 2010s with deepfake technology and even more in the 2020s with nearly perfected automated chatbots which Google, Microsoft and OpenAI invested heavily in.[2]

Official narrative

A.I. is creating a fusion of humans and machines. Machines improve or threaten to take over decision making in human society making humans superfluous some day soon.

In 2021, Stuart J. Russell was to deliver a series of four Lectures on the theme "Living with Artificial Intelligence". Lecture 1 was entitled "The Biggest Event in Human History". [3] A "golden age for humanity" could come along, although "machines don’t have an IQ". Intelligence is defined as follows by Russell: Humans are intelligent to the extent that our actions can be expected to achieve our objectives. Moreover, this poor definition of intelligence means that the end justifies the means if it is "successful" in achieving the goals of the programmer: All those other characteristics of intelligence; perceiving, thinking, learning, inventing, listening to lectures, and so on, can be understood through their contributions to our ability to act successfully. He does not explore who gets to define what success constitutes and for whom. [4]

Concerns

The "quality" of the A.I. depends on the data sets used, the selection and training on these data sets depends on the intentions of the humans involved.[5]

A.I. dystopia

In October 2024, speaking at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Julian Assange said:


“Artificial intelligence is being used for mass assassinations in Gaza.
The majority of targets in Gaza are bombed as a result of artificial intelligence targeting.”

Afshin Rattansi responded on X:

"The US, UK, EU and Israel have created an AI dystopia".[6]

The use of A.I. to create fictional and imitate existing people became a problem in the late 2010s. Gabon was one of the first actual countries where deepfakes instigated a coup in 2019.[7]

A.I. imagery abuses

A 2023 report by the BBC mentioned the Internet Watch Foundation had seen images on the internet, where celebrities were "transformed" back into kids in pictures, and the pictures shared again with the kids wearing less clothes and being abused.[8]

In 2024, The Internet Watch Foundation said a manual found via the Tor broswer contained a section encouraging criminals to use “nudifying” tools to remove clothing from underwear shots sent by a child. The manipulated image could then be used against the child to blackmail them into sending more graphic content. The author claimed he had sucessfully extorted "13 year olds girls in the UK."[9]

Mass Surveillance

Most corporations have a clause in the consent forms for their products to record users through video and audio to improve their systems recognising speech and text patterns.[11] Microsoft and Apple contractors have admitted to listening to users of XBoxes they "said that recordings were sometimes triggered and recorded by mistake".[12][13]

Natural language parsing

Natural language parsing, i.e. understanding ordinary human language, has long been the holy grail of artificial intelligence, as it offers the chance to communicate with computers as easily as with other people. However, its feasibility (or even possibility) — together with what actually constitutes "intelligence" - remains an open question.

Zach Vorhies points out that Microsoft bought the exclusive license to GPT-3 and could be producing text of such high quality that it can not be distinguished from the writing of a person.[14]

Auto-generated biographies and website articles

A number of domains for websites that automatically generate biographies from publicly available data on the Internet have been registered in the 2019 period.[15][16][17][18]

Microsoft patent

Patents registered by Microsoft in 2021 seem to indicate that the natural language parsing technology has matured so much that it can imitate persons.[19][20] Initial reports about the development of the technology started in late 2016.[21]

Online security consultants Barracuda Networks published[22] a study indicating. 39% of all internet traffic in 2021 was from malicious automated computers software, repeating previous research[23] from the 2010s, painting the eerie reality where thus over 50% of the internet is bots purely "talking" to each-other. There are reports that by 2017, conversations on major social media platforms are to some extent handled by script/AI activity.[24]

When comparing this to earlier studies[25] naming astroturfing the work of bots, questions begin to arise how one can still be sure something in real.[26] Apart from the more practical problems; bots created by people competing with regular customers for the most basic products, to sell them with higher profit later on, and unknown spooks using bots[27][28] to simulate online support or astroturfing for a cause.

Psychological aspects

While the concept of "Artifical Intelligence" is clear, the process whereby it happens is impossibly obscure to a lot of people, giving the technology some sort of mystique that can be exploited for psychological purposes.

All software is made by human programmers who control it at every stage. Whether writing it using computer code or selecting data sets for it, human input is essential, and can therefore be used for political purposes. Nevertheless, A.I. software may appear to be somehow impartial, fooling people into accepting its decisions as easily as they do life's vicissitudes beyond human control.

Control

"World computer simulations", predictive scenarios, i.e Event201 and large scale disaster preparation exercises may - unwittingly or not - fall in this category. They may help unfolding and at the same time controlling a self-fulfilling prophecy.[29]

For example, Blackrock's trading robot (called "Aladin") can move enough money to create (and exploit) monetary bubbles. Researched Google bubbles include the terms "terrorism", "covid" and "miserable failure" - the last returned "G. W. Bush" as first hit while the bubble was in full swing (the system had to be halted to stop skyrocketing). While in rare cases funny, the destructive effects on war, the world economy, personal freedom, public opinion and totalitarianism (resulting in "Gleichschaltung") are underestimated.

Forced conformity

The internet user is bombarded today with "what others think/like/search now", etc (note the present tense). Salomon Asch's experiments have shown that similar group pressures create a stunning dynamic: 30% (or more) of subjects under similar conditions gave up on their personal opinion and followed the (in Asch's experiments manufactured, i.e. falsely portrayed) consent. Robert Epstein and others have reproduced similar results concerning Google's (and other search engine's power to influence elections and make businesses a failure or success, see for example The new mind control.

A.I. may be used to decide about social control techniques, as the Chinese Social credit system does, or deny access to public resources, log-ins, or account creation (Google et. al.) as conditioning (aka punishments) bypassing in effect the legal system. A.I. easily creates an unconcrollable jurisdiction.

To avoid oscillation from uncontrolled and possibly dangerous feedback loops, diversity, i.e random variations in these channels are necessary. Overuse of A.I. poses a risk in that these variations are reduced in number and effect; or viciously abused for purposes of power and social control.

Propaganda aspect

A.I. propaganda tries to convince the public otherwise and fosters a deterministic world view, which may push "believers" into a state of learned helplessness or dumbing down (the belief that one is too dumb to make decisions by oneself).

Warfare

A Telegram channel posted about the suspected use of A.I. (operated by the American military) to plan the operations of the Ukrainian army amidst the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine:[30]


“It is no secret that the enemy is using AI and neural networks. The computer processes information and "highlights" troop concentrations via mobile signals, messengers, and phones - where vulnerable positions are. The AI identifies weak and strong positions, where to attack, and where it is better not to move. When all the moves have been calculated, all that remains is to make a decision.
An example - the Ukrainian generals did not accept the plan for a counter-offensive at Kharkov, they were against it. The handlers insisted on the plan, the Americans pushed it through. Contrary to the opinion of the AFU command, an order was given to attack Balakleya-Yuzum, etc. The Ukrainian army was unsure of this operation, it went on strike, it was a forced order. But the result worked, marched like a tank through the mud. Ukraine uses western interactive maps where everything is completely marked - tank columns, the concentration of equipment, etc. Any chief of staff - brigade, regiment etc. - to exclude "friendly fire" makes online corrections and they do not have difficulties with passing as we do (but it does not always work)...”

US

The National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence is a key part of the government’s response to what is often referred to as the coming “fourth industrial revolution,” which has been described as “a revolution characterized by discontinuous technological development in areas like artificial intelligence (AI), big data, fifth-generation telecommunications networking (5G), nanotechnology and biotechnology, robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and quantum computing.”

The Commission is a temporary organization, and is supposed to submit its final report to Congress in October 2020. The Commission will cease operations following the submission of its final report. [31]

The vice-chair of NSCAI, Robert O. Work – former Deputy Secretary of Defense and senior fellow at the hawkish Center for a New American Security (CNAS), described the commission’s purpose as determining “how the U.S. national security apparatus should approach artificial intelligence, including a focus on how the government can work with industry to compete with China’s ‘civil-military fusion’ concept.”
