Cebrián has been considered by various international media as one of the ten most influential Spaniards in Spain and Latin America for 44 years (from 1976 to 2019).

Background

His father Vicente Cebrián was a an important official in the fascist government of Francisco Franco, being senior press officer and director of the newspaper Arriba, the party newspaper of the Spanish fascist party Falange. Juan Luis Cebrián studied humanities at the Complutense University of Madrid and entered the Official Journalism School of Spain at age 15, graduating in 1963 at age 19, still in the years of the fascist government.

Career

Cebrián went to work as chief editor at Pueblo[1], one of the three main fascist newspapers, led by Emilio Romero, a close friend of his father.

He also participated in the founding of the relatively liberal Cuadernos magazine in 1963. In 1974 he was appointed head of the RTVE information services by the last government of the Franco dictatorship.

In 1976 Jesús de Polanco, owner of an editorial group, founded the newspaper El País, and appointed Cebrián as its first chief editor, a position he held until November 1988, when he moved to leadership position in the Prisa media group, which also includes El País.

From 1986 to 1988 he served as president of the International Press Institute (IPI), a suspected Cold War CIA front.[2]

Exposure

Cebrián was named in the Panama Papers.[1]
