Career

Grant Shapps was formerly Secretary of State for Transport from July 2019 to September 2022.[5] Shapps also had Cabinet responsibility for the Northern Powerhouse.[6] A member of the Conservative Party, he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Welwyn Hatfield since the 2005 General Election.[7] He was Chairman of the Conservative Party from 2012 to 2015, also holding the title of Minister without Portfolio in the Cabinet Office.[8] His salary was paid by the party.[9][10][11]

Following the 2010 General Election, he was appointed Minister of State for Housing and Local Government; the following 9 June, Shapps was appointed as a Privy Counsellor.[12] On 11 May 2015, he resigned as Party Chair after his appointment as Minister of State for International Development. On 28 November 2015, he stood down from his ministerial position due to allegations of bullying within the Conservative Party.[13]

He said that vaccines will be needed for travel "for evermore".[14]

Dubious online businesses

Shapps is a serial internet "entrepreneur" who has used the names Michael Green, Corinne Stockheath and Sebastian Fox to promote various get-rich-quick schemes.

As Michael Green, Shapps founded web sales business, HowToCorp, which claimed that clients who spent $497 on its software could "make $20,000 in 20 days guaranteed or your money back." What clients actually got for their money was an e-book telling them to write their own e-book and sell it for almost $500 to 100 people.[15][16]

Shapps repeatedly denied using pseudonyms or having a second job after entering parliament and, in 2014, threatened legal action against a constituent who had stated on Facebook that he had. Then, Shapps backed down and admitted he had been lying all along.[17]

In November 2013, the Metropolitan Police decided not to investigate allegations about the past business affairs of Shapps made by the Labour MP Steve McCabe. But, in an unusual move, the Met told McCabe that lawyers who advised the police concluded that the selling of the software may be "an offence of fraud" and perhaps other offences.[18]
