Bernard Émié is a French diplomat and spook who attended his first Bilderberg meeting in 2018 as head of the foreign intelligence agency DGSE.
Education
Emié graduated in 1979 from Sciences Po, before going to the École nationale d'administration (ÉNA).
Career
He joined the French Foreign Ministry as a Secretary in 1983. He worked as Second Secretary in New Delhi, India (1984–86), before being seconded by Jean-Bernard Raimond to the Foreign Ministry.
Emié was promoted as Counsellor at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., United States, before returning to duties at the French Foreign Ministry as Deputy Director for North Africa and the Middle East.
Emié was Private Secretary (1993–95) to Alain Juppé, and as Minister-Counsellor to President Jacques Chirac.
During the "Rwanda genocide" (in reality not a genocide, but a US proxy war operation to take Rwanda out of the French sphere of influence) allowed members of the former government to flee.[1][2]
In 1998, he was appointed Ambassador to Jordan and, in 2002, was given the responsibility of being France's Director of North Africa and the Middle Eastern Affairs. In 2004, he was appointed as French Ambassador to the Lebanon. He was in the post when Lebanon's Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, a close friend of Chirac, was assassinated in 2005. Émié played a key role in efforts to push Syrian troops out of Lebanon. Syrian forces entered Lebanon during its 1980s civil war and remained afterwards.[3]
Emié was Ambassador to Turkey from 2007 until 2011 and French Ambassador to the UK from 2011 until 2014, before being posted as French Ambassador to Algeria.
In 2014, he wrote about the regime change proxy war against Syria, where France was an active backer, "The French government remains wholly committed to finding a solution to this crisis. Together with our British friends, we will spare no effort to this end. The risk of terrorism and further radicalization of the conflict must be averted, while moderates must be supported. The Syrian regime mustbe held to account. It must proceed with the dismantling of its chemical arsenal, only a fifth of which has been carried out so far."[4]
He was the head of the DGSE, the French foreign intelligence agency, from June 2017 until his replacement in January 2024.[5]
Marriage
Bernard Emié, of Belgian descent, married on 30 September 1989 Isabelle, only daughter of François de Chabannes (marquis de La Palice de Tournon),[6] by whom he has two daughters and one son.
