A prestigious Dutch elite fraternity

LSV Minerva is an elite fraternity from the University of Leiden. A report from the newspaper Volkskrant reported "two-thirds of influential Netherlands was a member of Minerva in 2010.

Pro Patria

“Back in the day, both Frits Salomonson and Oscar Hammerstein were members of the elite Minerva fraternity, together with much of the royal family, not to mention Joris Demmink and Pieter Bakker Schut. Both also served as "praeses" (basically a squad or platoon commander) in the Minerva-linked Pro Patria ("Pro-Homeland") , a patriotic militia for drunk students that serves as a ceremonial guard during events associated with the royal family. Once a year Prince Bernhard came to talk to its leadership. Reportedly Demmink also served in Pro Patria. Holland's most famous comedian, Youp van 't Hek, actually wrote a few words about Pro Patria in a 1990s fax to Frits Bolkestein, a right-wing Bilderberg participant who has played a central role in the rise of Holland's "populist" candidates Geert Wilders and Thierry Baudet. In his 1998 book Fax, we read: "As you know I come from the circle of preppy frat boys and I inquired a little with some guys who in that period were stomping around at Leiden's Minerva. ... Don't let them tell you anything Frits [Bolkestein, a Bilderberg visitor], that Pro Patria is a very creepy little club about which the most disgusting stories are making the rounds. Stories I don't even dare to write down and which are so terrible that they couldn't have been made up by the most treacherous mind. Even if 10 percent is true, then you become uncontrollably nauseous for a long time."”

Founded in 1866, the Royal Leiden Student Association for Voluntary Exercise in Arms "Pro Patria" is a student militia. The militia is a sub-association of LSV Minerva. The mother regiment in the armed forces is the Garderegiment Grenadiers en Jagers. Prince Bernhard was patron of Pro Patria. After the death of Prince Bernhard, the Inspector General of the Armed Forces became the patron of Pro Patria.

In addition to practicing shooting, Pro Patria takes part in military maneuvers, visits various defense units and contributes to the guard of honor during Prinsjesdag. Pro Patria also participates in Veterans Day as a ceremonial guard. Pro Patria also performs ceremonial tasks during the loyalty and mourning of members of the Royal House, as well as during visits by royals to Leiden Univeristy.

In addition, Pro Patria organizes discussion evenings on international security issues. Pro Patria is also a social association and is noted by the involvement of many former members. At the beginning of the 21st century, Pro Patria is still an active association and, along with the other student militias, the wedding of Crown Prince Willem Alexander and Máxima Zorreguieta and at the funerals of Queen Juliana, Prince Claus and Prince Bernhard. Since 1999, Pro Patria has also had female members.

Pro Patria was under increased scrunity during the cold war for their "scary-nationalistic" and "anti-monarch" sentiment which included refusing to wave to Queen Beatrix. Surrounding the deep politics behind the 1981 Dutch Cabinet crisis, the subgroup was banned from military practises, being banned from the yearly proceeding in the parliamentary quarter of The Hague in 1990 as well.
