In its own words:
"openDemocracy is committed to human rights and democracy. We aim to ensure that marginalised views and voices are heard. We believe facilitating argument and understanding across geographical boundaries is vital to preventing injustice."

Funded by individuals, but also organisations such as the Ford Foundation, the Open Society Foundations the Atlantic Philanthropies, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, National Endowment for Democracy, the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust and others.[1][2][3][4][5]

Open Democracy does by their own admission influence the media: "We receive daily information or interview requests from leading global media outlets including BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, Washington Post, The New York Times, Bloomberg, NPR, Russia Today, The Guardian, Huffington Post, Le Monde Diplomatique, El Mundo, Sky News, ITV, CBC, ABC, Channel 4, Islam Channel and USA Today."[6]

Call for the abolition of family

In March 2020 the Open Democracy website has published an article that called for the abolition of the family and for an end to private property.[7][8] Cited for the abolition of family is an article on Communemag[9] and a Tweet by one of its editors.[10]

Article on American fascism

An article by Louie Dean Valencia-García, Assistant Professor of Digital History at Texas State University, published mid January 2021, headlines: "This is American fascism - Like Mussolini’s March on Rome and Hitler’s Beer Hall Putsch, Donald Trump’s Insurrection is the beginning of years of street violence."
She concludes the article:

“Fascism and conspiratorial thinking have seeped into the minds of millions of Americans. If we compare Mussolini’s March on Rome and Hitler’s Beer Hall Putsch to Donald Trump’s Insurrection we should be reminded that the former examples were only the beginning of years of street violence. We can’t address this problem until we call it by its name: fascism.”
Louie Dean Valencia-García [11]

National Endowment for Democracy

Open Democracy was granted $150,000 from the 'CIA sidekick' National Endowment for Democracy in the period 2015-18, in a trend of increased US funding of UK media.[12]

It received a NED grant for $50,500 (£37,000) in 2017[13] to “recruit and train young emerging writers, thinkers, and leaders” from the Middle East “to write substantive articles related to democratic development in the region.” Another grant the following year worth $49,111 (£35,700)[14] was for the outlet to “provide a platform for emerging young thought leaders…on critical issues related to democratic development”, training sessions in countries including Egypt, Tunisia and Syria.

Finkelstein is clear: "It’s time to put a stop to this periodic charade, because it ends up besmirching the victims of the Nazi holocaust, diverting from the real suffering of the Palestinian people, and poisoning relations between the Jewish and Muslim communities. You just had an antisemitism hysteria last year, and it was a farce. And now again? Another inquiry? Another investigation? No."
