Gianni Riotta is an Italian, later naturalized US citizen, journalist, writer, television presenter and academic. Since 2011 he has worked for the newspaper La Stampa. He collaborates with the Italian edition of HuffPost and has been a columnist for La Republicca since April 2021. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. A journalist and editor with a strong transatlantic point of view, he attended the 2000,2001 and 2004 Bilderberg meetings.
Early Life
Son of Salvatore Riotta, editor of the Giornale di Sicilia, he made his debut in journalism at the age of 17, as a correspondent for Il Manifesto and as a contributor to the cultural pages of the Giornale di Sicilia. After graduating in Philosophy at the University of Palermo, in 1976 he moved to Rome. Subsequently he went on to write for La Stampa and then, in 1988, for Corriere della Sera (thanks to Bilderberger Ugo Stille's proposal to succeed him as a correspondent in New York). Thanks to a scholarship from the Fulbright Program, in the United States he attended the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York, where he obtained a degree.
Back in Italy, he taught at the University of Bologna and is part of the Faculty Council of the Italian culture course at Princeton, where he taught Communication. He has collaborated with The New York Times, The Washington Post, Le Monde, Foreign Policy. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. From New York he has been a correspondent for various newspapers, including La Stampa, L'Espresso and Corriere della Sera, the latter of which he was also deputy director.
On 20 September 2006 he was appointed director of TG1, the state channel RAI Uno's news program.
On March 30, 2009 , strongly supported by Emma Marcegaglia, Riotta took over the direction of Il Sole 24 ORE[1], being challenged among other things because the newspaper selected (Bilderberger) Giulio Tremonti as the best Italian candidate for the Person of the Year award, without the editorial staff in no way being involved in the choice;[2] he surprisingly left the management of the newspaper on March 15, 2011. Roberto Saviano did not fail to publicly declare his regret for Riotta's resignation, stating that "his management has created a free newspaper, with the anti-mafia battle at its center, that a responsible party of Confindustria had decided to fight ".[3]
Other
Since 2011 he has taught at LUISS University ; since 2012 he has been a partner, as well as a member of the board of directors, of the NGO Oxfam Italia,[4] while since 2014 he has hosted the program Eco della Storia broadcast on the Rai Storia channel. [5] Since 2018 he has been director of the "Massimo Baldini" school of journalism at Luiss Guido Carli in Rome , a school that has become a master of journalism and multimedia communication since 2019 .
In 2014 he was defined by Glenn Greenwald , then a journalist for The Guardian and then founder of The Intercept newspaper, "the opposite of journalism". [6][7]
Married and father of two, he lives mostly in the United States. Since 2001 he also has US citizenship.[8]
