UK musician and political activist with a focus on Palestine

Kareem Dennis, better known by his stage name Lowkey, is a British rapper and political activist from London. He first became known through a series of mixtapes he released before he was 18, before taking a hiatus from the music business. He would return in 2008, with appearances on BBC Radio and at various festivals and concerts including the BBC Electric Proms, Glastonbury, T In The Park and Oxegen in the buildup to his first solo album "Dear Listener", as well as collaborating with other British musicians to form the supergroup Mongrel. He released his second solo album, "Soundtrack to the Struggle", independently in 2011.

After another five-year hiatus, Lowkey released a string of singles between 2016 and 2018 to precede the release of his third album, "Soundtrack to the Struggle 2", released in 2019.[1]

Political activism

Lowkey is a vocal opponent of Zionism and is a patron of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. He characterises Zionism as colonialism and ethnic cleansing. In February 2009, he travelled to Palestinian refugee camps around the West Bank area to perform fundraising shows to help rebuild the Gaza Strip but was detained by the Israeli Police for nine hours at Ben Gurion International Airport and interrogated, while his passport was confiscated.

Lowkey has been a prominent member of the Stop the War Coalition and has spoken against the 2003 Iraq War. Furthermore, he has been a sharp critic of United States and British foreign policy, claiming that the two countries are only interested in supporting leaders who are under their influence or are willing to assist them. He also claims American media overlooks those within the country who do not believe in American military supremacy.[2]

Corbyn supporter

In May 2017, Lowkey endorsed Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn in the UK/2017 General Election, saying:

"We have a choice between policies which foster empathy and policies which foster greed, resentment, estrangement and alienation."

In November 2019, along with other public figures, Lowkey signed a letter supporting Jeremy Corbyn describing him as "a beacon of hope in the struggle against emergent far-right nationalism, xenophobia and racism in much of the democratic world" and endorsed him in the UK/2019 General Election.[3]

"The Watchdog"

"Good Riddance to the War on Terror"
Lowkey looks at Israel's Unit 8200

In July 2021, Lowkey hosted "The Watchdog", the new MintPress podcast show, and was joined by journalist Whitney Webb to examine the IDF’s military intelligence Unit 8200, which gave birth to the NSO Group responsible for Pegasus spyware, and how Israel’s national security state is merging with that of the United States to target free speech and dissent.[4]

"Good Riddance to the War on Terror"

In August 2021, Lowkey produced an 11-minute YouTube video with Double Down News titled "Good Riddance to the War on Terror" which begins with the question:

“It’s great that the world is concerned for human rights in Afghanistan, but where have you been for the last 20 years?”

And concludes:

"Our future cannot be defined by warfare and enemies - we have to find a way in which humanity can come together to survive the major de-stabilisation which climate change will bring."[5]

"Palestine Will Never Die"

Lowkey's "Palestine Will Never Die"
Exposed: Piers Morgan and Ben Shapiro

On 28 November 2023, Lowkey released his new track "Palestine Will Never Die" featuring Mai Khalil and shedding light on the ongoing situation in Gaza.[6]

"Palestine Will Never Die" offers a narrative of the hardships and endurance of the Palestinian people since the war’s commencement. Lowkey’s lyrics describe the stark realities and struggles faced in Gaza, while Mai Khalil’s haunting melody adds depth to the song’s message.

Addressing topics like the media’s inadequate coverage of war crimes and the broad international support for Palestine, the track stands as a poignant musical testament to the resilience and unyielding spirit of the Palestinian people amid adversity.

The song is gaining attention worldwide, adding a powerful voice to the discourse surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.[7]
