|
Matthew John David Hancock is a UK politician who was made UK/Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in July 2018. A relatively young and obscure politician, he came to the limelight during the UK handling of the declared Covid-19 Pandemic, where he fronted several of the government's most draconian lockdown policies.
In April 2021 it emerged that he had a stake in Topwood Ltd, an NHS contractor in which his sister, Emily Gilruth, was involved since its foundation in 2002.[1]

Resignation
On 26 June 2021, Matt Hancock resigned as Health Secretary following publication in The Sun of pictures of Hancock in a clinch with his political adviser Gina Coladangelo that were recorded by CCTV in his office. In his letter of resignation, Hancock said:
"I want to reiterate my apology for breaking the guidance, and apologise to my family and loved ones for putting them through this."[2]
Ann Johns on Twitter reacted:
"Hancock should have resigned over the Serco contract, the Care Home deaths, the PPE disaster, the treatment of NHS workers and carers & especially 160K deaths caused by incompetence. Job gone, marriage over & probably an investigation to face & bring justice to grieving families."[3]
Early life
Hancock was born on 2 October 1978 in Chester, Cheshire, to Michael Hancock and Shirley Hills (now Carter).[4]
Hancock attended Farndon County Primary School, in Farndon, Cheshire, and the independent King's School, Chester. He took A-levels in maths, physics, computing and economics.[5] He later studied computing at the further education college, West Cheshire College.[6][7] He studied at Exeter College, Oxford, and graduated with a first in philosophy, politics and economics, and earned a MPhil degree in Economics at Christ's College, Cambridge a few years later.[8] Hancock became a member of the Conservative Party in 1999.[9]
