Haymarket-a.jpg
The Haymarket affair in Chicago. An unknown person threw a dynamite bomb at the police as they attacked a strike meeting, and the bomb blast and friendly fire resulted in the deaths of seven police officers; seven anarchists were convicted to death for conspiracy, without having knowledge of the bomb. The affair might have involved agents provocateurs and other underhand tricks. The next day martial law was declared, not just in Chicago but throughout the nation.
