Ivo Samkalden was a professor and former Dutch minister. His tenures as Minister of Justice and Dutch Interior Minister were short. At the end of his employment working for the Ministry of Colonial Affairs in Indonesia he was arrested and placed in internment camps by the Japanese and Indonesians for almost 4 years during and after World War 2. Samkalden endured much more struggles as first Jewish mayor of Amsterdam from 1967 to 1977, suppressing the peace-protests in the Dutch capital promoting nonviolence, an end to the cold war, and expanded the capital with many new districts and projects aimed to change the capital's economy from mainly industrial to corporate. During his tenure, the first coffee-shops were opened and multiple drug-networks were set-up. Klaas Bruinsma escaped this "law and order mayor".[1]
