Twitter, like all the other corporate tech giants, does censor content for reasons other than indecency.

Twitter/X has removed content for reasons other than indecency. This article is primarily about censorship by Twitter/X, although it also mentions censorship of Twitter/X.

Concerns

Censorship may not even be the worst coming from the platform. The basic claim of this tweet shortly after substantiated by an investigation of Alan MacLeod for Mintpress.

Twitter/X is active in censoring the content of the 3rd rail topics such as the accusations of Isaac Kappy or the Dark Overlord document leak about 9-11. Twitter has been known to arbitrarily delete accounts before particularly those supporting movements in Iran, Russia, or Bangladesh, citing “malicious” activity, “inauthentic behavior” or contributing to national conflict. TruePublica claims to "have known for a long time that Twitter restricts our Tweets and acts as a guard to stop our followers exceeding 2800 followers.Facebook did exactly the same"

2026

Twitter suspended the account within hours.

• X will cancel/suspend accounts above a certain level of influence whom call on to refuse to serve in the US military, or refuse to participate in illegal wars. In March 2026, the account of the Center on Conscience & War was suspended within hours after they sent a tweet that informed new members of the armed services that "within 365 days of enlistment can report failure to adapt and get an entry-level discharge" which has a lower level of evidence required. The account (connected to Mike Prysner) and matter apparently having to much traction, was reinstated within 24 hours, after some outcry did happen. In December 2024, the account of Warren Balogh was indefinitely suspended, after he called on service members to refuse to act as cover for Israel's genocide. One of his tweets read: "If you're on active duty in the U.S. military, remember you have a unique opportunity to strike a blow for justice by simply refusing to serve in any support for Israel's genocide. You will not be despised as a coward. You will be hailed as a hero by all civilized world."

2025

• The "translation feature" in X via Grok can apparently be selectively disabled for user groups or topics. The translation from Hebrew was reportedly disabled for "anti-Israel" user groups, amidst a surge in "mistranslated expressions that made content appear more inflammatory to those who do not speak the language". However, an online article on Israel Hayom noted that "posts in Israel [still] appear to have that option". The feature apparently being reinstated for all users shortly after wider recognition of censorship. Milena Preradovic (German journalist) notes how she likes to use the translation feature since she does not have native speaker parity and found out that with the most dicey tweets about Epstein, the translation feature will not work.

• There are reports in 2025 that X is removing information from tweet chains by breaking the link in these chains, or making otherwise later tweets unavailable; thus effectively removing the information from public view.

2022

• Claims that Twitter employees, in some cases, were selling verification badges for certain users were confirmed by Elon Musk in November 2022. Accounts that had these badges, until his takeover, were reserved for opinion leaders that were acceptable in the eyes of the Twitter employees that handled these matters, presumably with approval of Jack Dorsey.

2020

• In July 2020 Twitter removed over 7000 accounts which referenced QAnon. Twitter was an active participant in the COVID-19 censorship, and in August 2020 it censored Babylon Bee and began censoring all links to BitChute videos.

• In October 2020, less that 3 weeks from the 2020 US Presidential election, Twitter locked Donald Trump's account.

• ZeroHedge reported in January 2020 that their Twitter account had been suspended.

• In August 2020, nearly 2,000 pro-Venezuelan Twitter accounts, including Venezuelanalysis.com were removed for “engaging in a state-backed influence campaign” (on U.S. audiences). This comes after Twitter suspended Venezuelan government accounts in 2018 years ago.

In June 2020, Ashley Goldenberg, an independent blogger who goes by the moniker ‘Communism Kills’, was banned from the Medium and Twitter platforms after she complied a list of corporations that had gone "woke" and defended BLM events.

2019

• The Grayzone reported in December 2019 that Ben Nimmo and the DFRLab prompted Twitter (and Facebook) to delete hundreds of accounts.

• In 2019, Twitter was complying with requests for content removal from the Turkish government.

• In 2019, Ray Blanchard, a scientist with a global reputation in the field of gender dysphoria found that his account had been suspended after he published his opinions on the topic.

• In July 2019, after "the wildly successful Unity4J online vigils in which which well-known Assange defenders would appear to speak out against his persecution", the Unity4J account was removed from Twitter.

2016

In December 2016 Craig Murray was "ghost banned" by Twitter, resulting in a 90% decrease in traffic to his site from that site. Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, reported in 2017 that he had been "shadowbanned" because of his writings about Donald Trump.

• On May 31, 2016, Twitter agreed with Facebook, Google and Microsoft to a European Union code of conduct obligating them to review "[the] majority of valid notifications for removal of illegal hate speech" posted on their services within 24 hours.

Censorship of Twitter

Twitter has been censored in Turkey. In February 2016, it was claimed that Twitter had closed around 125,000 accounts since mid 2015 for "for threatening or promoting terrorist acts, primarily related to ISIS."
