Selin Sayek Böke is a Turkish politician, member of the Republican People's Party (CHP), who became Member of Parliament for İzmir's second electoral district on 7 June 2015. She was deputy leader of the CHP responsible for economic policies. Born in the United States, she worked as an economist, notably as a lecturer and assistant professor at American universities and at the IMF, before moving to Turkey to be parachuted into party leadership positions in 2014. 4 Days after becoming an MP, Böke went to Austria for the Bilderberg meeting.

Selin Sayek Böke was born into a Turkish-American family on 24 August 1972 in Buffalo, New York, United States; her father is İskender Sayek and her mother is Füsun Sayek. One part of her family is Antiochian Greek, while another part of her family is Sunni Muslim ethnic Turk from Niğde.

Education

She graduated from TED Ankara College in 1989. In 1993, she graduated from Middle East Technical University Faculty of Economics. Between 1993 and 1999, she pursued a master's degree and a doctorate at Duke University in the United States, in the field of economics.

Economist Career

She later began teaching at Duke University while working as a project advisor at the World Bank. In her role as an advisor, she worked on World Bank projects in South Africa, north and central Europe. She received her Ph.D from Duke in 1999.

Between 1999 and 2001, she worked at the Bentley University Economics Department as an assistant professor. She later worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) office in Washington D.C. as an economist. During her work at the IMF, she also gave lectures at Georgetown University. In 2003, she became a member of teaching staff at Bilkent University. She became an assistant professor in 2010 and became the Chair of the Economics Department at Bilkent University between 2011 and 2014. Between 2013 and 2014, she worked as vice dean of the Bilkent University Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences. Since 2011, she is a member of the advisory board at the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) Social Sciences research Group (SOBAG). She is a founding member of the Füsun Sayek Health and Education Development Foundation.

Political career

In 2014, she was elected to the Party Assembly of the Republican People's Party. Although she grew up in Ankara, she was made a quota candidate from Izmir. She became Member of Parliament for İzmir's second electoral district on 7 June 2015. 4 Days after becoming an MP, Böke went to Austria for the Bilderberg meeting.

She became the Deputy Chairman of the CHP Responsible for Economic Policies, and the Party Spokesman. At the congress organized by the CHP in Antalya in 2014, Böke said in the communique she presented, "We must adapt to capitalism. The CHP needs to put before the society a social democratic production model that is compatible with capitalism and touches people."

On May 6, 2017, she resigned from the positions. After the next congress held in July 2020, she was appointed as the General Secretary of the CHP.

In 2019, she was elected as the deputy chairman of the Socialists, Democrats and Greens Group in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). Böke became the first Turkish parliamentarian to hold this position. From January 2020 - January 24, 2022 she was the chairperson of the PACE European Social Charter Subcommittee and as of January 24, 2022 the chairperson of the Committee on Social Problems, Health and Sustainable Development.

Groomed for leadership

Yilmaz Polat, the Washington correspondent of the ABC Newspaper pointed out that CHP Deputy Chairman Selin Sayek Böke held a series of contacts in Washington and said, "Who invited her, who she met with was not informed."

Cumhuriyet Newspaper writer Işık Kansu wrote that CHP Deputy Chairman Selin Sayek Böke made a series of contacts in Washington after the November election.

No public statement has been made so far regarding Böke's contacts.

No information was given as to who invited her or who she met with.

There are many questions about the trip.

Işık Kansu wrote that Böke was accompanied by former US Ambassador to Ankara Francis J. Ricciardone in some of these meetings.

Böke's name was mentioned frequently after the party congress.

The messages I received show that the trip is still a matter of curiosity within the CHP.

I called CHP's USA representative Yurter Özcan and she said that he was not aware of Böke's contacts.

Economist Selin Sayek Böke worked at the IMF and the World Bank in Washington, and she has a network of people.

It is normal for her to meet with financial circles.

Böke met with Kemal Derviş in Washington and made some visits together.

It is not clear whether Böke met with US officials or with whom she met.

Who could Ambassador Ricciardone have brought the CHP Deputy Chairman to meet?

For some reason, the name of Turkish politicians became associated with the American diplomat and intelligence officer serving in Turkey. There was also talk of them going to Washington for a career in politics.

This situation started with Turgut Özal.

Özal's name frequently came up with Ambassador Morton Abromowitz during the first Gulf crisis. .

Tansu Çiller's close relationship with Istanbul Consul General Carolyn Huggins was discussed.

Tayyip Erdoğan's name was mentioned with the famous CIA member Graham Fuller.

Erdemir conducts analyzes on Türkiye and the region at FDD, where former CIA Director James Woolsey is the Chairman of the Leadership Council.
