DescriptionThe 34th Bilderberg, 109 participants

The 1986 Bilderberg Meeting was the 34th such meeting and had 109 participants from 19 European countries, the United States and Canada.[1] It was held at the Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland on April 25-27, 1986, 3 weeks after the bombing of a disco in Berlin, a fact reflected in item 4 on the agenda. The 109 guests included 24 business executives, 30 politicians, 5 financiers, 10 editors/journalists and 7 academics. The next meeting was the 1987 Bilderberg.

Agenda

The 1986 Bilderberg Agenda has been leaked and is now online.[1]

1. The Soviet Union Under Gorbachev: Foreign Policy Implications

The moderator was Theo Sommer and the panelists were Arthur A. Hartman and Denis W. Healey. A paper for it was most probably written by Arnold Horelick.

2. The Western Global Response To The Soviet Challenge

The moderator was Donald MacDonald and the panelists were Henry A. Kissinger, Michel Rocard and Helmut Schmidt.

3. The Fragmentation Of The World Economy: Debt, Currency Disorder, Protectionism, Uneven Growth

The moderator was Eric Roll and the panelists were Alexandre Lamfalussy, Paul A. Volcker and Lynn R. Williams.

4. Current Events: Terrorism

The moderator was Etienne Davignon and the panelists were Richard R. Burt, Renato Ruggiero (later a member of the Bilderberg Steering committee), Theo Sommer and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John C. Whitehead. The US delegation attempted to mobilise support for the recent attack on Libya, which they stated was in retaliation for the La Belle discotheque bombing in Berlin. No mention was made of the Arms for Libya weapons deal which sold plastic explosive to the Libyans and saw US green Berets train them in bomb making.

5. South Africa

Off list attendees

In response to a May 1986 question by John Biggs-Davison, Margaret Thatcher replied that "I was invited to attend this year's conference on this basis and was pleased to accept."[2]
