John Francis Harcourt Baring, 7th Baron Ashburton, KG KCVO DL is a British banker, Central banker and former chair of British Petroleum.
Background
Baring came from the Baring family of bankers.John Baring was the first son of Alexander Baring, 6th Baron Ashburton, and Doris Harcourt. His maternal grandparents were Lewis Harcourt, 1st Viscount Harcourt, and Mary Ethel Burns, daughter of Walter Hayes Burns of New York City, granddaughter of Junius Spencer Morgan and niece of US deep politician J. P. Morgan.
Career
He was Chairman of the Board of Barings Bank from 1985 to 1989. He was a member of the Board of the Bank of England from 1983. Baring also sat on the Board of Directors of Jaguar, Dunlop and Royal Insurance. Baring was also the CEO of British Petroleum (BP) from 1992 to 1995.
From 1990 to 1994, Baring also worked for the Charles, Prince of Wales in his capacity as Duke of Cornwall. He held the office of Lord Warden of the Stannaries during this time. The holder of this ceremonial office today is in fact the Duke's most senior adviser on matters concerning the Duchy of Cornwall.
Marriage
In 1955 he married Susan Mary Renwick (born 1930), daughter of Robert Renwick, 1st Baron Renwick. The marriage, from which he has two sons and two daughters, was divorced in 1984. In 1987, he married Sarah Cornelia Spencer-Churchill (born 1935), daughter of John George Spencer-Churchill, in his second marriage.
Title
In 1990 he was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. In 1991, he inherited the title Baron Ashburton from his father, thereby gaining a seat in the House of Lords, which he lost again by the House of Lords Act 1999. In 1994, like his father before him, he was inducted into the Order of the Garter as a Knight Companion and appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire.
