Paul Jolles was a Swiss diplomat, businessman and Bilderberger. His jobs included Chairman of the Board, Nestle S.A. and State Secretary for Foreign Economic Affairs.
Background
Jolles was son of journalist Leo Jolles and his wife Ida (b. Hegnauer. Jolles studied at the universities of Bern, Lausanne and Harvard, where he earned his doctorate with a dissertation The Theory of Civil Liberties in Swiss and American Constitutional Law. In his student days he joined the Swiss Zofingerverein.
Career
From 1943 he was a member of the Swiss Federal Administration, first in the Federal Department of Political Affairs (now the FDFA), where he worked in Washington, D.C. participated in the conclusion of the Agreement on German Assets in Switzerland of 1946, subsequently in the Department of Economics. From 1957 to 1961 Jolles was Deputy General Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.
In 1961, Federal Councilor Hans Schaffner brought him back to Bern as a delegate of the Federal Council for trade agreements. From 1966 to 1984 Jolles was director of the Federal Office for Foreign Trade, from 1979 in the rank of Secretary of State (Minister). He played a key role in the negotiation of the bilateral Free Trade Agreement of 1972 between Switzerland and the European Economic Community.
Paul Jolles was also President of the Kunsthalle Bern. After resigning from the civil service, he became Chairman of the Nestlé Group and a Privatdozent at the University of Bern. He was an honorary doctor in jurisprudence and in 1984, together with Fritz Leutwiler, winner of the Freedom Award of the Max Schmidheiny Foundation.
Relations
Paul Jolles married Erna Ryffel. His daughter, Claudia Jolles, is the long-time editor-in-chief of the Swiss art magazine Kunstbulletin.
