Frank Swaelen was a Belgian Christian Democratic (CVP) politician who attended the 1980 Bilderberg meeting before becoming Minister of Defence.

Education

Frank Swaelen went to school in Antwerp and studied law at the Catholic University of Leuven, where he received his doctorate in law in 1953. In 1955 he joined the National Confederation of Parent Associations (NCVOV). From 1956 to 1966 he was secretary general of this. From 1956 to 1964 he was a member of the National Bureau of Christian Democratic youth. During this period he was also editor-in-chief of the Journal of CVP youth. From 1964 to 1966 he was its chairman. From 1966 to 1976 he was General Political Secretary of the CVP.[1]

In 1968 he became a member of the Chamber of Representatives for the electoral district of Antwerp and remained so until 1985. In the chamber, he was vice-president of the CVP group from 1979 to 1980.

Although he was his party's education specialist, he served as Minister of Defence from 1980 to 1981. He then was party chairman of the CVP from 1981 to 1988.

From 1985 to 1999, Swaelen sat as a directly elected senator in the Senate. He also chaired the Belgian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe from 1992 and was its president from 1994 to 1996.[2]
