Kostas Karras was a Greek actor and politician who was a member of the Bilderberg Steering committee.

Education

He studied Political Science in London[where?] and acting at The Drama School of the Greek National Theatre. He was a graduate of the Royal Academy of Arts, London.[1]

Acting career

In 1963 he made his debut in Agatha Christie's Mousetrap. He then began his successful collaboration with Elli Lambeti, with whom he had a relationship and appeared among others in projects such as Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park (as Paul Parker) and Tennessee Williams' Streetcar of Desire (as Kowalski). From then on, he created his own theatre groups and achieved personal success in Nikolai Gogol's Diary of a Madman and Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit.[2]

His contribution as an actor to Greek cinema is significant, where he first appeared in 1961. However, his best film appearance is considered to be the role of Menelaos in Michael Cacoyannis' Iphigenia (1977). In Greek television he starred with great success in many serials.

Political career

From 2000 to 2007 he was a member of the Greek Parliament with the New Democracy party. He has been honorary president of the charitably The Smile of the Child (Greek: Το Χαμόγελο του παιδιού), since 1994[3]. He organized the first international fundraiser for victims of the Bosnian War. He has repeatedly made representations to strengthen vulnerable social groups.

From July 2000 he was in charge of the cultural movement branch of New Democracy.
