The 2019–20 Wuhan coronavirus outbreak began in December 2019, in the city of Wuhan, China, when patients were found to be suffering from a previously unknown fatal disease, which was named COVID-19. The disease, asymptomatic in some cases, spread outside of China in spite of efforts to contain it.

Origins

DailyMail.com, 2020-02-22 : Dramatic surge in UNTRACEABLE clusters of coronavirus cases around the world sparks dire warnings from disease experts that 'containment methods are not going to work'.

In early January reports emerged that linked the origin of the virus to the local sea food market, which also sells meat from wild animals (bushmeat). At first the consumption of meat from snakes, then later from bats was alleged to be the cause of the outbreak. Reporting by commercially-controlled media downplayed other possibilities, such as those involving the Wuhan BSL4 facility.

Bioweapon?

Various factors have been cited as suggestive that the event may have been a race-specific bioweapon. Brian T. Kennedy, chair of The Committee on the Present Danger: China, has tweeted and re-tweeted a large number of Tweets, (some from corporate media with connections to the Committee), claiming the virus originates from a Chinese biological weapons program.

Francis Boyle stated in 2020 that he believed it was a bioweapon and that the WHO knew it.

Timing

The virus was first detected right before the Lunar New Year extended vacation, a time of intense travel activity in China. 5 million people left Wuhan, and a lot of other cities as well, for their home village.

Wuhan is a central hub for train travel.

The Wuhan Institute Of Virology, China's only biosafety level 4 facility, is close to the market where Covid 19 was first reported. In 2016 researchers at the WIV reported "the isolation and characterization of a novel bat coronavirus which is much closer to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in genomic sequence than others previously reported," The proximity of could indicate that the virus may have been released from the WIV, or that whoever released it wished to suggest that possibility.

Pathology

The virus may have the most impact on Asian males. US financed Radio Free Asia reported on February 14th, that crematories in the Wuhan area are working 24/7 and some since mid January, due to deaths from the virus. The article suggests the number of cremations in Wuhan is beyond 10,000. The official reports out of China are way below that, but in comparison China remains by far the most affected country.

Incubation period

The incubation period is 1-14 days, with a median of 5-6 days. Some disease carriers remain asymptomatic.

Community transmission

Travel restrictions within as well as to/from China were an early effort to try to contain spread of the virus. As of 25 February, China, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Japan, Singapore and South Korea are areas with ongoing community transmission of the disease.

Chinese reaction

The Chinese military, on its website eng.chinamil.com.cn, republished a report from China Daily, saying the "fight against the epidemic is no less than a war". Those who die in the line of duty will be honored as martyrs and their families will receive support by the government. An opinion peace from Global Times remarked that "decoupling between the industries of the both countries" is now, while it generally has been discussed for a while, a possibility and wanted from China hawks in the Trump administration.

Economic impact

Stock markets

On 29 February 2020, The Guardian reported:

Stock markets globally lost about $5tn (£3.9tn) of value last week, as measured by the MSCI all-country index.

Last weekend China’s president, Xi Jinping, told local officials that low-risk areas should “resume full production and normal life” and the government reported that larger factories reached 85.6% of their capacity by the middle of last week.

Analysts at ING said:

“This isn’t as positive as it sounds. Even if China‘s factory production can recover in March, it will still face the risk of a low level of export orders. This is because the supply chain will continue to be broken, this time in South Korea, Japan, Europe, and the US, where COVID-19 has begun to spread.”

Travel

Travel restrictions have had a major impact on consumer behaviour and on business; shipping from China has been reduced by over 50%.^[When?] This unpredicted disruption has lead to global anxiety about shortages of goods.

People

Professor Charles Leiber was charged on 28 January 2020 with two federal counts of making a materially false, fictitious and fraudulent statement to investigators regarding his participation in China's Thousand Talents Program.
