Dominique Benoît Marie Hubert Ghislain baron Struye De Swielande was a Belgian diplomat and ambassador to NATO and the United States. He attened the 2004 Bilderberg meeting.
Family
Struye was a grandson of the Ypres senator Félix Struye de Swielande, who obtained hereditary nobility in 1908. He was a son of Pierre Struye De Swielande (1908-1984) and of Cecile de Brouwer (1911-1997). Pierre Struye was president of the Court of Appeal in Ghent.
Education
Struye De Swielande held a doctorate in law from the Catholic University of Leuven, a master's degree in law from University College London and a diploma from the London School of Economics. At the University of Ghent he also obtained a master's degree in European law.
Career
On 1 February 1974, Struye began his career as a diplomat. Among other things, he was active as a diplomat in various countries, such as (Austria, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Zaire and the United States).[1]
From 1984 to 1987 he was legal adviser in the Cabinet of Leo Tindemans, and from 1987 to 1990 consul general and Deputy permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva. In 1990 he was in charge of the European Department of the Belgian Ministry of foreign affairs, in 1991 and 1992 he was chief of staff in the Cabinet of Mark Eysken. From 1992 to 1994 he was diplomatic adviser and Deputy Chief of staff to Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dehaene and in the period 1994 and 1995 director general in the Ministry of foreign affairs.[1]
In the period 1995-96, Struye headed the Cabinet of Reginald Moreels. From 1997 to 2002 he was the Belgian ambassador to Germany. From 2002 to 2006 he was Permanent Representative of Belgium to NATO. On 29 december 2006, he became ambassador of Belgium to the United States. In February 2009, he began his last foreign assignment, as ambassador to Congo. From 2012 to 2014 he was diplomatic advisor to Minister for Defence Pieter de Crem.[1]
On 17 september 2014, Struye De Swielande was granted the personal title of baron. Dominique baron Struye De Swielande died in October 2015 at the age of 68.[2] Private
