Mehmet Şimşek is a British-Turkish banker and politician. Having worked for the US embassy and several international banks, he was selected to become Minister of Finance from 2009 until 2015. He attended two Bilderberg meetings (2016 and 2018) as Deputy Prime Minister, and one more in 2024 after again becoming Minister of Finance.

Backgound

Şimşek comes from a Kurdish family from the vicinity of Batman. According to his own information, he only learned Turkish in elementary school.[1][2]

Education

Şimşek received his Bachelor's degree in Economics from Ankara University in 1988. After working as a research assistant , he received a state scholarship to study at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, where he received his master's degree in Finance and Investments in 1993.

Banking career

He worked as a senior economist at the US Embassy in Ankara from 1993 until 1997. In 1997, Şimşek spent about a year in New York City, where he worked for UBS Securities.

He also worked as a senior economist and bank analyst at Bender Securities, later a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank[3], from 1998 to 2000.

Şimşek worked for seven years as Chief Economist and Strategist for the Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa region at Merrill Lynch in London. During this time, he had numerous contacts with the Turkish authorities and the Central Bank and was involved in shaping economic policy in cooperation with the AKP government.

Political career

In Spring 2006 Şimşek was nominated as a candidate for the Turkish Central Bank Governor, but the appointment was not approved. A few months later, Şimşek gained a private meeting with Prime Minister Erdoğan. That meeting proved the catalyst to the birth of his political career. In literally the space of a weekend, Şimşek received sabbatical leave from Merrill Lynch and found himself back in Turkey.[4]

In 2007, he was elected as an AKP candidate in the Gaziantep constituency. Soon after being sworn in as a Member of Parliament, Simsek was named State Minister of the Economy. He was suddenly in a position to push forward an agenda of structural reform . He was responsible for the Treasury and the Central Bank of Turkey.[4]

Şimşek was then appointed Minster of Finance in 2009, and had the position under Prime Ministers Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Ahmet Davutoğlu until 2015.

Şimşek was Deputy Prime Minister from 2015 until the beginning of July 2018 and was considered a guarantor of good economic development among international investors and was counted among the adherents of an orthodox economic doctrine. Şimşek was replaced as an authority on financial and economic issues by Erdogan's son-in-law Berat Albayrak.[5]

In June 2023, he returned to the post of Minister of Finance.
