Lobster Magazine's initial focus was on deep politics - roughly, the impact of the intelligence and security services on history and politics - but has since widened out to include contemporary history, politics and economics and associated subculture. All new issues of Lobster (from 2009) are available on-line for free. Previous issues back to 1983, or articles from them, are available on-line for a small fee online or as a CD-Rom. Most issues up to number 57 are available in hard copy from the editor, Robin Ramsay.

In 1977 Robin Ramsay started State Research Bulletin with Stephen Dorril. In 1983 the pair[citation needed] started The Lobster.
Penetration by MI5
Ramsay relates how in 1987, he attracted the attentions of an MI5 agent very interested in the Lobster Magazine.[1]
