Doris Leuthard is a Swiss politician and lawyer. Since 1 August 2006, she has been a member of the Swiss Federal Council, and was elected as Swiss President for two annual terms 2010 and 2017.[1][2]

Mediator

In September 2017, President Leuthard offered to play a role behind the curtain to facilitate dialogue between North Korea, the United States and South Korea in the escalating nuclear weapons crisis:

“I think it really is time for dialogue,” Leuthard told a news conference in Bern. “We are ready to offer our role for good services as a mediator. From 1 August 2006 to 31 October 2010 Doris Leuthard was head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, and on 1 November 2010 she became head of the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications.[4]

She was elected President of Switzerland for 2010, and on 7 December 2016 for 2017.[5]

Representing the canton Aargau, Doris Leuthard was a member of the Swiss National Council from 1999 to 2006, and was President of the Christian Democratic People's Party (CVP/PDC) between 2004 and 2006.[6]
