Martin Krasnik is a Danish journalist , author and editor-in-chief of Weekendavisen. In his work as a TV host, he has particularly distinguished himself with longer interviews in for public broadcaster DR2's news program Deadline.

He attended the 2022 Bilderberg conference.

Background, upbringing and education

Martin Krasnik is the son of doctor and professor Allan Krasnik and bioanalyst Else Krasnik, née Thorbjørnsen. He has a younger brother named Benjamin Krasnik who is a journalist at Kristeligt Dagblad and a younger sister who lives in Israel. He was born in Copenhagen and raised in both Jerusalem and Copenhagen. He went to the Jewish school Carolineskolen and then to Ordrup Gymnasium. He has a master's degree in political science from the University of Copenhagen, but has also studied at the [[Hebrew University in Jerusalem[] and the London School of Economics.

Journalistic career

Krasnik began his journalistic career with an internship at Weekendavisen in 1994, while still studying. At the age of 27, he became a member of the editorial leadership at Weekendavisen after a few years as a correspondent in Jerusalem and London. He moved to DR2's Deadline in 2003, "where he is remembered, among other things, as one of the few journalists who managed to make the then Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen sweat in an interview".[1] In 2005, he returned to Weekendavisen as USA-correspondent. In 2010 he was employed by TV 2, as host of the magazine "Ellemann|Lykketoft" on TV 2 NEWS. The program has been running weekly and deals with current foreign policy issues.

In 2012 , Krasnik was bought back to DR2 together with Niels Krause-Kjær and Frederikke Ingemann.

Made a name for himself

In 2013, Krasnik made a name for himself with a quite confrontational interview with Lars Hedegaard against the backdrop of the then recent assassination attempt against Hedegaard. The interview,[2] in which Krasnik, among other things, compared Hedegaard's book I krigens hus with the Protocols of Zion created a lot of debate and gave rise to criticism from, among others, Søren Krarup and his daughter, DR's board member Katrine Winkel Holm. Helle Merete Brix, who is strongly critical of Islam subsequently claimed that two of Krasnik's concrete statements in the interview were untrue, namely that Hedegaard had no documentation for a reference to the so-called Mecca Declaration, and that a source in the book was a Serbian war criminal.[3]

Two experts from the University of Southern Denmark assessed that Krasnik's interview with Hedegaard was "an exciting and good interview", that "overall it was an excellent interview" and "this was an example of a form of confrontational interview which we have very few of them in the Danish context".[4] Lars Hedegaard himself called Krasnik's behavior "pure evil". [5]

Mads Gilbert interview and Gaza coverage

In August 2014, a confrontational interview with Norwegian Gaza doctor Mads Gilbert made headlines. DR received almost 1,000 complaints based on the program.[6] A Facebook update asked "Is Martin Krasnik a spokesman for Israel?" and called for complaints to be made to DR "about Martin Krasnik's inability to be a neutral, objective journalist on the issue of Israel/Palestine". [7][8]

More generally about the Danish media coverage of the fighting in Gaza, the chairman of the Danish Palestinian Friendship Association, Fatih Al Abed, thought, that "there are some journalists who are too attached to Israel to act neutrally",[8] and a signature page called on politicians to respond to what was seen as a disparity in the coverage of the Palestine conflict with the alleged background that "The Danish journalist team covering Palestine consists exclusively of Hebrew-speaking journalists." In addition to Krasnik, Steffen Jensen, Allan Sørensen and Hanne Foighel were mentioned.[9]

Krasnik himself defended himself by saying that "I am equally hard on all parties" and "whether it is an Israeli ambassador, or an Israeli spokesman, or whether it is a former Israeli soldier, or whether it is Palestinians, or whether it are academics with great sympathy for the Palestinian cause: I am equally critical of them all." [10]

Back to Weekendavisen

At the end of June 2016, Krasnik announced that he would switch to newspaper journalism again at the end of August, as he had received a favorable offer from Weekendavisen. While Krasnik was employed by Weekendavisen, he was loaned back to Danmarks Radio at the beginning of November 2016 to report in conversational style from New York on the upcoming US presidential election. On 2 January 2017, Berlingske Media announced that Martin Krasnik had become the new editor-in-chief of Weekendavisen.[11]
