Jan, Baron Huyghebaert is a Belgian businessman. He was a member of the Coudenberg group, a Belgian federalist think tank. Huyghebaert participated in 11 Bilderberg meetings between 1993 and 2010.

Education

He obtained a degree in Philosophy, Language and Literature from the University of Antwerp and a doctorate in Law from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

Career

Huyghebaert began his political career as a member of the Christian People's Party (CVP). He was an attaché to the Cabinet of Minister for science policy Théo Lefèvre and cabinet advisor to Prime Minister Leo Tindemans. From 1973 to 1977 he was chairman of the youth branch of the CVP He was a city councillor of Antwerp, and from 1978 to 1985 a port official.

In 1985, he succeeded Louis Delmotte as chairman of the executive committee of the Kredietbank, the predecessor of KBC Group. In 1991 he succeeded Luc Wauters as chairman of the Board of the financial holding company Almanij. In 2005, he became chairman of the board of Directors of the KBC Group following the merger of the KBC Bankverzekeringsholding and Almanij. He succeeded Willy Breesch as chairman of the KBC Bank Insurance Holding. In October 2011, Thomas Leysen succeeded him as chairman.[1] He was also chairman of the Board of Directors of Kredietbank Luxembourg.

Huyghebaert was also a member of the Board of Directors of airline Sabena from 1992 to April 2001. In February 1996, he became interim chairman of Sabena, remaining in office until April 1997.[2]

He was vice-president of the Federation of Belgian Enterprises and the Flemish Economic Association, director of Steel Wire producer Bekaert, director of the holding company Gevaert.

Huyghebaert was a member of the Coudenberg Group, A Belgian federalist think tank.

In May 2008, Huyghebaert became a member of the Board of Directors of the Baillet Latour Fund, which aims to support Belgian excellence on an international scale in the fields of medical research, training, heritage and Olympic sports. It derives its resources from the income from the dividends it receives as a co-owner of brewery AB InBev.[3] also in 2008, Huyghebaert succeeded Philippe de Schoutheete De Tervarent as chairman of the fund. In 2020, he was succeeded by Thomas Leysen, who previously also succeeded him as chairman of the KBC Group.[4]

He was elevated to the rank of baron by King Albert II of Belgium in 1994. His motto is Ubi Caritas et Amor.
