Swiss journalist and academic. Editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Tribune de Genève 1982-92.

Daniel Cornu is a Swiss journalist and academic. He was editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Tribune de Genève. He is the author of several books on the ethics of journalism, a discipline he taught at the universities of Geneva, Neuchâtel and Zurich.[1] He attended the 1970 Bilderberg meeting.

Early life

After secondary studies (Latin-Greek) at the College of Geneva, today Calvin College, Daniel Cornu took courses at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Geneva (1958-1962) and obtained a license. It was in this same Faculty that in 1994 he defended a doctoral thesis on the ethics of information, based in particular on the thoughts of Paul Ricœur and Jürgen Habermas.

He began his career as a journalist at the Journal de Genève (1962-1966). At the Tribune de Genève, he directed the section on Swiss politics (1971-1977), was correspondent in Paris (1977-1981), before being appointed editor-in-chief (1982-1992).

Subsequently, Daniel Cornu devoted himself mainly to training, as director of the Romand Center for the Training of Journalists (1993-2004), in Lausanne. He was associate professor of information ethics at the University of Neuchâtel (1988-2004), a discipline he also taught as part of "Communication and media" at the University of Geneva (2000- 2004), in a master's program in applied ethics at the Ethics Center of the University of Zurich (2006-2008), as well as at the University of Fribourg (]]2012]]-2016).

He has published several books on journalism and the media, including his book Journalism and Truth, often cited as a reference in journalism ethics[2]. Published in 1994, it was the subject of a new revised and updated edition in 2009.

In connection with his professional occupations as a journalist and teacher, Daniel Cornu was a member of a federal commission of experts on Swiss press law and press assistance (1973-1975), of the board of administration of the Swiss Telegraph Agency (1988-1997), of the Public Council of Radio Suisse Internationale (1993-1994), as well as of a commission of experts with a view to introducing the principle of transparency into Geneva legislation administration (1999-2000). He was a member (1994-1995), then as vice-president (1996-2003) of the Swiss Press Council[3], an internal regulation body of the profession. In this capacity, he was the main author of the initial draft of the Guidelines attached since February 2000 to the Declaration of the Duties and Rights of Swiss Journalists. He was part of a select mediation commission in application of the information law of the Canton of Vaud (2004-2008).

In 1998, Daniel Cornu was offered the post of press mediator (ombudsman) of the newly created La Tribune de Genève. It has been in operation since 2007 for the entire Swiss Edipresse group, then since 2012, after the takeover by the Zurich group Tamedia (TX Group), and until December 2020[4] for its publications in French-speaking Switzerland.

Among his other activities, Daniel Cornu was a member of the Federal Commission against Racism (2002-2008). He served from 1994 to 2014 on the foundation board of the Autonomous Faculty of Theology of the University of Geneva. Appointed Chairman of the Ethics and Deontology Committee of the University of Geneva in 2009, for a period of four years, he remained a member at the end of his mandate.

Honors

In 1968, Daniel Cornu received the Edouard Frommel Prize from the Academic Society of Geneva for his degree thesis on the political writings of the theologian Karl Barth[5].

In 2012 he received an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of Louvain[6].
