DescriptionThe 26th Bilderberg, held in the US

The 1978 Bilderberg Meeting was the 26th such meeting and had participants from 18 European countries, the United States, Canada and "various international organizations".[1] It was held at the Henry Chauncey Conference Center, Princeton, New Jersey, USA. The 98 guests included 19 business executives, 26 politicians, 7 financiers, 12 editors/journalists and 13 academics. The next meeting was the 1979 Bilderberg.

Agenda

The 1978 Bilderberg Conference Report has been leaked and is now online. There were two topics on the agenda, followed by an open discussion.[1]

1. Western defense with its political implications

There were two working papers. The first working paper, from an American, was entitled Some Political Aspects Of Western Defense. The second working paper, from an 'international' participant, was entitled Defense, Security And The Western Alliance. It argued that "The Soviet military threat in Europe has grown but it remains one that the West can cope with if it has the will", that "There is no alternative to reliance on the U.S. nuclear strategic forces to deter Soviet nuclear capabilities in Europe" and that "The major test for the Alliance over the next decade is whether it can maintain its cohesion in the face of domestic political change in Alliance countries."

After the two papers were presented, a plenary discussion ensued.[1]

2. The changing structure of production and trade: consequences for the Western industrialized countries

There were two working papers. The first was an American paper on Adaptation To Structural Change. The second working paper, by an American, was entitled Developed Country Reactions To Calls For A New International Economic Order.

3. Open discussion about current problems in European-American relations
