Bernard Ésambert is an engineer, ministerial adviser and financier. He participated in several Bilderberg conferences, including that of Aachen in 1980.
Education
He graduated from the École polytechnique (1954) and Mines ParisTech.
Career
He held various positions at the Ministry of Industry then joined the cabinet of Georges Pompidou, then Prime Minister (1967–1968)[1], then that of Maurice Couve de Murville (1968–1969)[2] and finally, again, that of Georges Pompidou who became President (1969–1974). He was then his industrial adviser, and thus “one of the authors of the great industrial programs of Pompidolism” .
In 1971, he invented the concept of “economic warfare” in an article published by the journal Les Informations and declined this theme in two books, The Third World Conflict (1977) and La Guerre économique mondiale (1991), and in numerous articles. He would later chair the Academy of Economic Intelligence[3].
In 1974, he joined Crédit Lyonnais, which he left in 1977 for the position of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Compagnie Financière Edmond de Rothschild, which he held from 1977 to 1993[4]. At the same time, he held the position of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Banque Sofirec (1980–1993)[5] and Chairman of the Management Board of Compagnie Financière Holding from 1982 to 1993[6].
In the Bolloré group, he chaired the Compagnie des Glénans then co-chaired Bolloré Technologies from 1993 to 1994[7][8][9] as well as the subsidiary SDV (SCAC-Delmas-Vieljeux)[10].
In the Lagardère group, he was vice-chairman of the supervisory board from 1994 to 2004, and at the head of the supervisory board of the Arjil bank from 1995 until the sale of the latter by the Lagardère group in 2004. He subsequently chaired, from 2005 to 2008, the Advisory Board of Arjil.[11]
He also sat on the supervisory boards of Biomérieux-Pierre Fabre[12], Devoteam and the Institut de l'Entreprise.
He also chaired the board of directors of the École Polytechnique (from 1985 to 1993)[13][14], the sustainable development commission to the Prime Minister (from 1993 to 1995)[15], the Institut Pasteur (from 1994 to 1997)[16], the French Center for Foreign Trade (from 1998 to 2000)[17], the AGEM (Association of European Mobilization Groups, from 1989 to 1998) and the School of Neurosciences of Paris-Ile-de-France from 2007 to 2011[18].
He has been a member of the Stock Exchange Commission since 1996, which later became the Autorité des Marchés Financiers. In 1998, he submitted a report in which he advocated legislative change to allow companies to buy back their shares[19].
In December 2012, he was appointed honorary president of the Club des Vigilants after having chaired it since its creation in 1999. Bernard Ésambert is also president of the French Foundation for Research on Epilepsy, which he founded in 1991[20], the Federation for Brain Research which he founded in 1999[21] and X-Résistance from 2006 to 2014.
Since 2012, he has been president of the Institut Georges-Pompidou, and vice-president of the Foundation "Un avenir ensemble" at the Grand Chancellery of the Legion of Honor.
Bernard Ésambert received the Saint-Simon Prize on September 1, 2013 for his latest work Une vie d'influence, behind the scenes of the Fifth Republic[22].
