He was in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He received a B.A. in international relations from Stanford University in 1950.
Career
He then worked in Europe for both the Marshall Plan and the Central Intelligence Agency.[2][3]
He began his thirty-three year career at the illustrious publishing company Time Inc. as an advertising salesman for Life Magazine in 1954. He was publisher of Time Magazine in the 1970's and became Chairman of the Board of Time Inc. in 1980.[2]
He was on the board of the New York City Ballet, was chairman of the Business Committee for the Arts, was a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's business committee, and active in raising money for the Rockefeller family's Museum of Modern Art.[4]
He was co-chairman of the Independent Commission of the Future of the State University of New York and he served as Chairman of the Board of the American University in Bulgaria. He sat on the boards of the National Urban League, Refugees International, World Wild Life Fund, Phoenix House and the National Council for Adoption.[5]
Activities
In 1977, he wrote a note to CIA director Stanford Turner, regarding a TIME-sponsored visit of 27 European businessmen -several of them Bilderbergers - and 10 TIME executives, showing how close their cooperation was:
Dear Stan: The meeting at Langley was one of the highlights of our visit. You and your colleagues were candid and forthcoming and helped further our understanding of the American intelligence mission. It was enormously helpful to our European guests in getting a better understanding of the United States, which I think is essential in the furtherance of our overall policy. Many thanks for spending so much time with us.[6]
Character
Described for his rugged confidence as a "nonsmoking Marlboro man."[7]
