Career
After training as a car mechanic at the then Daimler-Benz AG, Schrempp studied at the engineering school in Offenburg, the predecessor institution of the Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, graduated as an engineer in 1967 and was then hired again at Daimler-Benz AG. In 1974 he went to South Africa and worked in the management of the group subsidiary Mercedes-Benz of South Africa there until 1987, with an interruption from 1982 to 1984, when he successfully renovated the commercial vehicle subsidiary Euclid Trucks in the USA.[1]
In 1995, Edzard Reuter was forced to resign as Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz AG. Schrempp was appointed as his successor. He said goodbye to the Reuters concept of an "integrated technology group" and instead began to put the car business back in the spotlight.
In the mid-1990s, Schrempp significantly polarized the public discussion on economic and social policy and provoked, above all, CDU politicians. In particular, his public announcement that his company would not pay a penny of income taxes in Germany until the turn of the millennium caused outrage. He said, "You won't get anything from us anymore".[2]
