Raymond Probst was a Swiss diplomat. He attended the 1983 Bilderberg as one of the top civil servants in the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs.
Early Life
Probst came from a family of Swiss living abroad. He completed his schooling first in Riga (in newly independent Latvia) and then in Biel, after the family had settled there in 1929. From 1937 to 1942 he studied law at the University of Bern, where he received his doctorate in 1954. [1]
Career
From 1942 he worked for the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs. In 1945 he was involved in the repatriation of interned Russian soldiers, where his knowledge of Russian stood him in good stead. In 1947 he became second legation secretary in Athens, from 1952 in the economic service of the embassy in Washington during the Korean War. 1955 first secretary of the legation, 1956 in the legal department of the EPD,
In 1959 he became head of the "Political Service West" in the Department. From 1966 to 1976 he was delegate for commercial contracts in the Federal Department of Economic Affairs (FDEA); From 1976 to 1980 he was Ambassador of Switzerland in Washington, from 1980 to 1984 he was State Secretary in the Political Directorate, succeeding Albert Weitnauer.
He supported the expansion of Switzerland as a "neutral middleman" (Iran hostage crisis 1979-81 and Falklands War 1982). He worked as a lecturer in The Hague and Washington. He saw his publications and lectures, among other things, as a contribution to domestic politics, for example in the question of Switzerland joining the UN and increasing development cooperation. In 1991-93 he helped rebuild the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.
After retiring in 1984, Probst remained stayed interested in the subject as President of the Swiss Society for Foreign Policy until 1996[2][3]
Probst was married to Annemarie Rey and had one daughter.
