Early Life

Probst came from a family of Swiss living abroad. He completed his schooling first in Riga (in newly independent Latvia) and then in Biel, after the family had settled there in 1929. From 1937 to 1942 he studied law at the University of Bern, where he received his doctorate in 1954. [1]

From 1942 he worked for the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs. In 1945 he was involved in the repatriation of interned Russian soldiers, where his knowledge of Russian stood him in good stead.
