Dutch state-operated IT project developer. Set-up the main infrastructure of many Dutch governmental sites.

Matthijs Veenendaal is a scientist based in The Hague working for the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research known as TNO in Dutch. The TNO was present and sponsored the summer conference set-up by HCSS members Sijbren de Jong, Rianne Siebenga and Katharine Klacansky where the Dutch Integrity Initiative Cluster was formed in 2017[1].

Connections

His LinkedIn page links to various international operatives working for cybersecurity companies, from the US to Greece and Japan. He has dozens of cyber warfare lieutenants, liaisons and generals as connections. Very well connected to say the least.[2]

Stratcom and Three Dutch Ministries

Veenendaal and leader Maria de Goeij met at the Riga, Latvia STRATCOM dialogue in 2018.[3][4] Veenendaal is noted as a vital scientist in the Dutch IT-world having set-up many government websites and more importantly "the development of cyber defence policy at the Dutch Ministry of Defence and was the principle author of the first Defence Strategy for Operating in Cyberspace (2012). He also played an important role in the development of the two National Cyber Security Strategies of the Netherlands."[5]

Deepfakes

At the Riga STRATCOM Dialogue, Veenendaal, in 2018 was a speaker for a session named “Did this Order Really Come from the President?” with the following guide;

“Trust is a key foundation of a well-functioning society. Without reliable communication, organizations cannot operate effciently, be they corporations or government institutions. Malicious actors are aiming to exploit vulnerabilities in communication flows. With the advent

of new technology, it is possible for adversaries to impersonate leaders and create false impressions among population.

The Tallinn based NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence will organize a session focusing on questions including: What is at stake? What can nations do to enhance and protect trust in democratic institutions? Or is it already too late?”
Matthijs Veenendaal [6]

Seemingly implying deepfake-technology and their use in statecraft was not a far-fetched idea.
