Oscar Bronner is an Austrian-Jewish newspaper publisher. From being a modestly successful painter in exile in New York, he somehow managed to find the wherewithal to found the Austrian newspaper Der Standard in 1988, which right away became a "leading newspaper" based on the model of the New York Times. He attended every Bilderberg meeting from 2005 until 2015.
Biography
Bronner was born in Haifa, Mandatory Palestine, on 14 January 1943. He is the eldest son of Austrian cabaret artist Gerhard Bronner, who escaped Austria after the 1938 Anscluss. In 1948, at the age of five, he returned with his father to Austria. Oscar Bronner worked as a lighting technician and assistant director in his father's theater, as a volunteer for the Arbeiter-Zeitung and the tabloid Express. He frequented Café Hawelka, where he got to know Karl Schwarzenberg and Kurt Moldovan.[1]
In 1970, Bronner launched the monthly economic journal trend and news magazine profil.[2][3] In 1974, trend and profil were sold and Bronner emigrated to New York, where he lived as a painter, having several exhibitions both in Europe and the US.[4]
He returned to Vienna in 1986 and in 1988 founded[How?] the national daily newspaper Der Standard, of which he remains publisher as of 2023[3][5]
In May 2014, Bronner left the board of Der Standard.[6]
Opinions
In 2018, on the right-populist FPÖ getting into government: "A party that is amicably linked with various other parties and governments in which illiberal democrats or autocrats are active. A party that has concluded a cooperation agreement with the Russian ruling party and now controls all the intelligence services of our country. One should not be surprised that the freedom of the press is considered endangered."[7]
In 2009, the Viennese communication scientist Fritz Hausjell said that the media industry would be well advised, after the cases of Otto Schulmeister (who was exposed as an an CIA agent) and Helmut Zilk, (Czech intelligence, later CIA), to work through the Cold War years in a broader context. "Otherwise, the general suspicion may arise that the entire industry has been infiltrated by this or that secret service." Editor Oscar Bronner said that the reappraisal of the role of the media was "certainly a sensible thing", and a corresponding initiative will definitely have to be discussed internally in the Association of Austrian Newspapers.[8]
